    Russians injury church and theatre in Kherson – pictures

    During the last two days, 20-21 July, the Russian military has broken the Mykola Kulish Theatre and the Greek Sophia Church in Kherson.

    Particulars: The Mykola Kulish Theatre, one of many largest theatres in Ukraine’s south, was hit by the Russians at round 14:10 on 21 July. A projectile broken the constructing's facade. No civilians had been injured or killed.

    The theatre reported {that a} column, the principle entrance and three home windows within the theatre café had been additionally broken.

    The Mykola Kulish Theatre in Kherson has run the Melpomene of Tavria theatre competition since 1999. The theatre has continued to function in different cities in Ukraine because the begin of the full-scale invasion.

    In March 2022, Oleksandr Knyha, director of the Kherson Music and Drama Theatre, was kidnapped by Russian troopers. He was later launched and left for Ukrainian-controlled territory. He was changed by a person who had beforehand been a safety guard.

    On 20 July, Russian troops hit the territory of the Greek Sophia Church.

    Inbuilt 1780, the Greek Sophia Church is the oldest church in Kherson. It was initially manufactured from wooden and later rebuilt in stone. The church was devoted to the Nativity of the Mom of God. The shrine is an architectural monument of nationwide significance.

    The church has an ebony iconostasis handmade by Greek craftsmen.

    The Kherson Oblast Analysis Library notes that the church was constructed by the Greek group.

    The library's official web site says: "The Greeks residing in Crimea petitioned Catherine II [the "Great" – ed.] to simply accept them as residents on the finish of the 18th century. They had been permitted to maneuver to what’s now territory of Ukraine. Some Greeks who settled in Kherson took an lively position within the building and enchancment of town. The Service provider's Vorstadt (suburb), town's central district, was often known as the Greek district, and Greek retailers lived there. The Greek Sophia Church was constructed and consecrated in 1780."
