PoliticsWar The G7 countries plan to increase pressure on China over its support for Russia. Tuesday, November 26, 2024 The G7 countries plan to increase pressure on China over its support for Russia.

G7 foreign ministers, meeting in Italy on Monday and Tuesday, will pledge to act against entities in China and elsewhere that support Russia’s war machine against Ukraine. A draft communiqué seen by Bloomberg said that pressure would be stepped up before Donald Trump takes office as US president in January. The language on China, if adopted, would mark an escalation from a previous decision in April, when China was asked to “guarantee” it would end its support for Russia with dual-use weapons. The G7 allies are expected to “continue to exert significant pressure on Russia’s revenues from energy, metals, and other commodities through effective implementation of existing measures and further action against the shadow fleet. Another section of the document condemns the involvement of North Korean soldiers in the war against Ukraine. The use of North Korean soldiers “marks a dangerous escalation of the conflict,” which also raises concerns about the transfer of nuclear technology to North Korea, the draft communiqué said.
