“Paradise” boss Dan Fogelman says episode 2 is certainly one of his favorites: ‘It is all Sterling’

As its first episode proved, Paradise isn't afraid to change issues up in season 2.

After a season of following Xavier (Sterling Ok. Brown) within the bunker as he discovered himself in the midst of the investigation into President Cal Bradford's (James Marsden) loss of life, season 2 kicked issues off with an episode that took us absolutely exterior of the bunker — all the best way to Graceland, really — and centered round a model new character: Shailene Woodley's Annie.

"We undoubtedly have extra of the post-apocalyptic drama in season 2 than we had in season 1, aside from our large episode that confirmed the world ending," sequence creator Dan Fogelman tells Leisure Weekly.

As for episode 2, Fogelman says followers can count on one other switch-up of types. "Our second episode is certainly one of my favorites as a result of it's all Sterling," he says. Meaning viewers will lastly meet up with Xavier now that he's left the bunker and crashed his airplane again within the exterior world.

"Within the current day, he's sort of on this action-adventure-hero film that's very post-apocalyptic and doubtless the darkest we go in that lane," Fogelman says, including, "However then his backstory is his preliminary meet-cute together with his spouse a few years earlier, and it's basic main man romcom stuff. It's so charming and romantic. Sterling doing each of these issues in a single episode of tv is basically thrilling to me."

Relating to the romances of season 2 — one thing season 1 didn't have a ton of — Fogelman says, "It's one thing that I at all times like writing. The world falls aside, what are you chasing? And everybody's chasing a connection and love so we lean a little bit extra closely there on this season."

However that's to not say that it's all romance on a regular basis … particularly not within the bunker.

"When it comes to the bunker story, there's much more of a spot coming aside on the seams and social rebellion and all that comes with it," Folgeman says.

So yeah, undoubtedly not as romantic.
