Macron: If Putin avoids assembly with Zelenskyy, Trump should reply

French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that his American counterpart Donald Trump can’t ignore it if Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin continues to evade a gathering with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, regardless of having agreed to it on the summit in Alaska.

Supply: Macron at a press convention on 29 August after assembly with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as reported by European Pravda

Particulars: Macron identified that through the summit in Alaska – greater than 10 days in the past – Putin informed Trump he was prepared to satisfy with Zelenskyy. Since then, Moscow has been inventing excuses for why it isn’t but ready.

Macron confused that if the assembly remains to be not agreed by Monday 1 September, "it should imply that President Putin performed President Trump (…) and this can’t stay with out a response". [N.B. Ukrainska Pravda does not recognise Putin as president – ed.]

Quote: "We are going to each communicate to President Trump… And if subsequent week we have now to conclude that when once more, after months of damaged guarantees, nothing is going on – we are going to argue very clearly for main and secondary sanctions to be imposed."

Background:

  • After outrage in Russia, Macron stated that he stood by his earlier feedback describing the Kremlin chief as a "predator" and an "ogre".
  • On 29 August, the Kremlin reiterated its explanations for avoiding a bilateral assembly between Putin and Zelenskyy.
