    In an announcement shared with EW in Could 2022, Bledel mentioned she gave a substantial amount of thought to her choice to step away from the present. "I’m endlessly grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the forged, and crew for his or her help," she mentioned.

    Bledel’s absence from The Handmaid's Story was defined within the season 5 premiere when June learns that Emily left her spouse, Sylvia (Clea DuVall), and their son, Oliver (Charlie Zeltzer), in Canada and returned to Gilead to renew the combat.

    Bledel, who divorced Mad Men star Vincent Kartheiser in 2022 after eight years of marriage, took a break from performing following her exit from Handmaid.
