Weeks earlier than HBO aired a pivotal episode of The Last of Us season 2 — the one which kills off his character, Joel Miller, and alters the course of the story transferring ahead — Pedro Pascal contemplates what his plans might be for the second that hour of tv hits the airwaves. "It's April 20. If it have been the '90s, I'd be excessive," he jokes with Leisure Weekly in late March, referring to the annual hashish vacation, 420. "However I feel I'll be working. So I don’t know."

In fact, Pascal hasn't thought of it a lot, whilst he embarks on a press tour to advertise the brand new season of the Emmy-winning drama collection. That's by design.

"I'm in energetic denial," the co-lead of The Final of Us with Bella Ramsey admits. "I understand this an increasing number of as I become old, I discover myself slipping into denial that something is over. I do know that I'm perpetually bonded to so many members of the expertise and simply should see them underneath totally different circumstances, however by no means will underneath the circumstances of taking part in Joel on The Final of Us. And, no, I don't spend plenty of time fascinated about it as a result of it makes me unhappy."

Pascal knew at the present time would ultimately come from the second he accepted the job forward of season 1. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have been decided to adapt the core occasions of the Final of Us video video games, which entail Joel slaughtering the Fireflies insurgent group with a view to save Ellie (Ramsey), though her loss of life would result in a vaccine towards the monster-spawning codryceps virus that destroyed the world. That mission additionally meant bringing a second to life in season 2, when Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), the daughter of the slain Firefly physician, hunts down Joel for retribution and kills him in entrance of Ellie. "It was only a matter of how and when," Pascal says.

Why HBO's 'The Last of Us' will give us Abby's backstory much earlier than the game Kaitlyn Dever HBO The Last of Us How Kaitlyn Dever nearly played Ellie in 'The Last of Us' movie before Abby role in HBO series Kaitlyn Dever, Bella Ramsey - The Last of Us, Season 2

That day arrives now with the debut of episode 2, titled "Via the Valley." Pascal remembers capturing his loss of life scene in Kamloops, Canada. It felt like another day. He remembers the "weirdly stress-free time" within the make-up chair, the place he had a "good dialog" with prosthetics guru Barrie Gower and make-up designer Paul Spateri. The consequences did plenty of the work, so he didn't have to put himself in any explicit mindset.

"I used to be at all times sidestepping how I actually felt, that in an enormous means my expertise was coming to an finish on the present," Pascal displays. "I suppose that was the strangest factor to step by as a result of I felt so bonded to everybody within the present after going by the gauntlet of season 1 collectively, not simply with Bella, however with the complete forged and crew. So to have this goodbye was very unhappy for me, and I had such a bodily manifestation, a violent mirror of how unhappy it was for Joel to die. To be trustworthy, it was fairly dreamlike."

Pascal remembers the second he stepped onto set in full make-up and prosthetics that emulated a swollen left eye, blood stains, bruises, and cracked limbs. "[I] killed the vibe fully as quickly as anybody set their eyes on me," he remembers. "This type of shock and heartbreak… it was bizarre to be on the receiving finish of that. It's like the acute model of, 'Is there one thing on my face?' I actually may see this form of grief take over everybody's look of their eyes."

The scene itself proved fulfilling for Pascal. He calls Dever, identified for Booksmart, Unbelievable, and No One Will Save You, "a gangster of an actor." Though there have been so many people concerned in that sequence — together with Isabela Merced as Dina, Spencer Lord as Owen, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, and Danny Ramirez as Manny — Pascal describes the expertise as if every part round pale away till it was simply him and Dever.

In a separate dialog with EW, Mazin praises Pascal's efficiency as a dying Joel. "It's simple to think about that his day was simply mendacity on a ground coated in blood, however there are these stunning moments," he says. "Bella watched the episode after which they referred to as me and mentioned it's when he strikes his hand, when he simply tries to maneuver in direction of [Ellie] that Bella simply fell aside. It's very simple to screw that up. It's very simple to only be stage deaf-y or do nothing. To search out one thing that stunning there, it's magical."

Pascal provides of that second, "I don’t know if it's captured on digicam, however [there's] a delicate sense that Joel can hear her within the final breath of life that he has left in him. He can hear her calling for him and listen to that she's at risk and desires to assist her and is unable to raise even a finger to take action. I bear in mind taking part in that, and that was actually devastating."

To make clear for these unfamiliar with the video video games, Pascal's Joel isn't fully gone from The Final of Us. There are scenes teased within the season 2 trailers involving him that we haven't seen but. Mazin and co-showrunner Neil Druckmann (a co-creator of the video games by studio Naughty Canine) verify these scenes "are coming."
