Keane blames Mac Allister for Liverpool draw as dirty Van Dijk ousted by Overlap pundits

Roy Keane and Ian Wright on Arsenal

Roy Keane blamed Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister for Alexander Isak’s stunning goal for Newcastle on Wednesday and claims Virgil van Dijk had VAR on his side in the 3-3 draw.

Mohammed Salah got an assist and a brace in the end-to-end game at St James’ Park to give Liverpool a 3-2 lead going into the final stages of the game before Fabian Schar scored a brilliant equaliser at the death.

Isak’s opener saw him take one touch to the side of Van Dijk before rifling his shot into the roof of the net, but Keane claims Alexis Mac Allister was at fault as the midfielder rushed out to close down Bruno Guimaraes, making it all too easy for the Newcastle star to skip past him and find Isak.

Keane said on The Overlap’s Watchalong: “Look at Mac Allister. Look at Mac Allister. Look at Mac Allister. Look at Mac Allister. Look at Mac Allister here. He can’t. Great strike. What power. If you’re on a yellow card and can’t run don’t go in there.”

Chelsea legend Pat Nevin was full of praise for Isak, who created multiple chances for his teammates before and after his wonderful goal.

“Alexander Isak is some player! Moments after he set up Lewis Hall for a chance which he can’t get on target he goes alone, turning Virgil van Dijk about 25 yards out and then absolutely leathering the ball into the roof of the net,” Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“That had power, swerve, dip…a sensational goal! Liverpool made a good start to this game, but as the first half went on, Newcastle have got better and better. And Alexander Isak has been the absolute star of the show.

“He’s created some golden chances for his team-mates before hitting one into the top corner. It was a very, very special goal from a special player.”

Newcastle had a glorious chance to double their lead before Curtis Jones’ equaliser as Anthony Gordon raced through on goal following a Joe Gomez error.

Gordon’s weak effort was easily saved by Caoimhin Kelleher but the Newcastle winger was left prostrate soon after as he was caught in the face by Van Dijk’s shoulder.

It didn’t look like an accidental coming together on the replays and both Ian Wright and Keane were adamant it was deliberate from Van Dijk.

Speaking on the Stick to Football Watchalong, Wright said: “He knows exactly what he’s doing. That’s a pen.”

Keane was in agreement with Wright, as he added: “That’s a penalty.”

Eddie Howe thought his side should have been awarded another penalty as Isak was brought down by Jarell Quansah, and also questioned the referee’s call to blow for full-time when his side were counter-attacking with a three on two.

“I thought it was a penalty on Alex, but I haven’t seen a replay, that was just an initial thought,” said Howe.

“I was surprised by the final whistle because I think we’d spent around two minutes on a free-kick in extra-time, so I was expecting seven minutes to be played. I think it was 5.15 when he’s blown, so that was a blow because it looked like we were in a good position.

“Then, I think VAR looked at (the Van Dijk and Gordon incident) and concluded nothing happened, so we have to accept it. I was surprised by it initially though.”

Fiorentina footballer out of intensive care, but may not return to Serie A

Edoardo Bove left the intensive care unit three days after losing consciousness. The player is suspected of having myocarditis, which could hinder his future career in Serie A.

It remains doubtful whether Edoardo Bove will be able to play in Serie A again.

Transmits UNN with reference to Il Messaggero.

Italian professional footballer Edoardo Bove left the intensive care unit three days after losing consciousness.

“Edoardo is fine, he is fit, he is recovering and we are happy,” and above all, ”he is out of intensive care.” This announcement was made by Fiorentina CEO Alessandro Ferrari into Mediaset microphones before the start of the Fiorentina-Empoli match in the Italian Cup.

In terms of health, doctors continue to conduct examinations to find out the causes of what happened.

It is assumed that Bove suffers from myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle tissue. This was reported by Gazzetta dello Sport. Further investigations will determine whether Beauvais needs a defibrillator implant.

Thus, according to the law, Edoardo Bove will no longer be allowed to play in Serie A.

Meanwhile, the letters of support from around the football world continue. In the last few hours, Fiorentina's Brazilian defender Dodo posted a preview of Fiorentina-Empoli with Beauvais' number 4 shirt and the caption “For you, brother,” as if to say that Viola is taking the field in his teammate's place.

The Curva Fiesole Firenze supporters' clubs organized a choreographed one: through a statement posted on their social channels, fans were encouraged to wear a scarf and keep it tightened throughout the duration of the Fiorentina anthem.

    To recap

UNN previously reported that Fiorentina player Edoardo Bove had an epileptic seizure and cardiac arrest during a match with Inter.

  • Liverpool finally fallible as Salah the saviour amid Gravenberch struggles vs Isak’s Newcastle

Liverpool finally fallible as Salah the saviour amid Gravenberch struggles vs Isak’s Newcastle

    Isak Newcastle

Newcastle showed the rest of the Premier League a very obvious route to success against Liverpool, but they don’t have Mohamed Salah.

We went one game too early when we suggested reliance on Ibrahima Konate this season might be a problem for Liverpool against Manchester City. Joe Gomez cruised through his first start at centre-back for over a year while Jarell Quansah dealt admirably with the troublesome Jeremy Doku from the bench. The Real Quiz came against Newcastle.

The smart money would have been on Quansah to start alongside Van Dijk – as was the plan at the start of the season before the academy graduate was taken off at half-time on the opening day – but emboldened by their displays against the champions, Arne Slot stuck with Gomez to Van Dijk’s right and Quansah to the right of him.

Neither looked comfortable in those positions, against a Newcastle side that showed the 18 improper teams Liverpool have beaten so far this season what we would suggest is a pretty obvious route to success against the league leaders: don’t give them time on the ball.

Ryan Gravenberch, so wonderfully poised and effective in possession this season, was rushed and didn’t like it. Alexis Mac Allister had a couple of excellent efforts on goal within a minute but was similarly badgered on the ball and failed to dictate the pace of the game as he usually does.

There was a general angst that we’ve not seen from Liverpool this season, with Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali winning the midfield battle, particularly in the first half, while Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak caused significant problems for the disordered backline.

Isak was brilliant throughout, stretching the Liverpool defence but also acting as Newcastle’s chief playmaker, finding all manner of angles with passes the best No.10s wouldn’t even have seen let alone had the ability to play with such unerring accuracy.

The Ball Stayed Ball as he smashed Newcastle into the lead, taking one touch to get a yard to the side of Van Dijk before unleashing into the roof of the net after Guimaraes showed quick feet to dance past Mac Allister in the build up.

Gomez then nearly gifted Newcastle a goal as he failed to get anywhere near enough on a back pass, saved only by a terribly weak effort by Gordon straight at Caoimhin Kelleher. But in what we assume was a concerted effort to humiliate from all of the players after our esteemed editor’s ‘gone to sh*t’ feature earlier in the day, Gordon did get his goal in the second half.

Gomez was hooked soon after the England international very predictably cut inside on his right and caught the Liverpool defender horribly off balance before forcing the ball beyond Kelleher, with Trent Alexander-Arnold brought on in his place to turn the game on its head.

Mohamed Salah had already provided a delightful outside-of-the-boot assist for Curtis Jones before scoring a brace to add to his ridiculous all-round statistics and take him ahead of Erling Haaland at the top of the goalscoring charts this season.

The first was an instinctive one touch finish into the far corner while the second saw him kill the ball with his right, swivel and fire home with his left. Having barely been involved in the first half, in the second he got a wonderful assist, two brilliant goals and also hit the bar with a shot that would have been the best of the lot had it been a couple of inches lower.

If we had to rank the performances of all of the players on the pitch, Newcastle may well have had their XI in positions two to twelve (though Alexander-Arnold would probably be in among them somewhere), but Salah managed to haul his side to a draw courtesy of him being the best of the lot by such a massive margin.

It’s the sort of performance from an individual that feels unfair. Newcastle certainly didn’t deserve to lose this game and an xG of 1.97 to Liverpool’s 1.69 suggests that if anything they should have come away with all three points. It felt like justice was served as Fabian Schar miraculously diverted Guimaraes’ cross from an absurdly tight angle while Kelleher flapped in the 90th minute to cap a classic Barclays game on a classic Barclays night of Premier League action.

It’s a game that clearly showed Liverpool’s fallibility on a night when Man City got some of their sh*t together, Arsenal sorted out Man United via the inevitability of their set-pieces and Chelsea did a number on Southampton. Liverpool’s backups weren’t great, but neither were the lauded stalwarts like Gravenberch, who looked understandably knackered having played every minute of every Premier League and Champions League game before being taken off with 20 minutes to play here. Slot’s been averse to rotation, but this may well be a game to change his mind.

Because Newcastle gave them a real scare, and if it not for the astonishing brilliance and inevitability of one ludicrous footballer in Mohamed Salah, they would have left St James’ Park with nothing, without the right to complain about it.

  • Amorim fails to stop Arsenal corners but Man Utd improvement is evident

Amorim fails to stop Arsenal corners but Man Utd improvement is evident

Arsenal v Man Utd: William Saliba scores

Arsenal did not look convincing in attack from open play against Manchester United, which is fine when you can unlock any team in world football from a corner, which they did twice on Wednesday.

Being set-piece savvy was beneath the bigger teams. It was the only way smaller teams score against them. Not anymore. Arsenal have turned that cliché on its head.

It must be lovely being able to bail yourselves out from a corner when you are failing to create from open play and two corner goals were the difference between Arsenal and Manchester United at the Emirates.

The Gunners have won points from their not-so-secret weapon on countless occasions and in other matches have been their route to open the scoring on the way to a convincing victory – just like against West Ham United on Saturday.

We say Arsenal weren’t convincing from open play but they were still better than United, who are in transition and learning to play a different formation under new head coach Ruben Amorim.

You can hardly say that Amorim was outsmarted by Mikel Arteta but he did not have an answer for those pesky corners. His way of dealing with them was to have six or seven defenders parked in the six-yard box, closer to Andre Onana’s line than the six-yard line. It clearly didn’t work given the scoreline but Arsenal had 13 corners in total, so it could have been worse…we guess?

Declan Rice saw the whole United defence parked on the line and was not bothered. In fact, his delivery has never looked more dangerous; it was on the money nearly every time. Bukayo Saka’s delivery was less convincing but still led to the second goal.

Arsenal’s opener came via Jurrien Timber, who flicked in his first goal for the Gunners from a delicious Rice corner. It felt inevitable as Arsenal won corner after corner and it was no surprise when their second came from the same pattern of play.

Saka’s back-post delivery found Thomas Partey, who headed it into William Saliba’s arse and the Frenchman wheeled off to celebrate as if he had just banged one in from 30 yards.

Partey should have scored from a corner in the early minutes, as it goes. He might not have expected the ball to find him but it did, hitting off his shoulder from three yards out and going wide. Two other close calls were when Joshua Zirkzee almost scored an own goal, being saved by a clearance off the line from fellow summer signing Manuel Ugarte, and when a wide open Mikel Merino headed just wide at 2-0.

It could have been worse for the Red Devils but limiting Arsenal to chances mainly from corners (which is their deadliest weapon, we know) is pretty good going.

United were competitive and are finally showing some identity on the pitch, something that was scarce under previous manager Erik ten Hag.

Last season, Arteta did not show Ten Hag respect by letting Man United knock the ball around freely. They did nothing with it and Arsenal’s game plan worked a treat, while braindead United fans insisted they ‘dominated the game’. Arteta showed Amorim plenty of respect with a high press and believe it or not, the visitors dealt with it admirably.

One move in particular in the early minutes saw first-time passes in their defensive third lead to Tyrell Malacia carrying the ball into the Arsenal defensive third in a matter of seconds. It is remarkable that it’s taken a new manager for these players to realise they are actually really good at their jobs.

While Amorim’s side showed maturity in an away game against ‘Big Six’ opposition by slowing the game down and playing out of the back effectively, they were characteristically toothless in attack, which shows what is easier for a new manager to address. The Arsenal back four was there to be attacked as well. Jakub Kiwior and Oleksandr Zinchenko started due to injuries to Gabriel Magalhaes and Riccardo Calafiori. That is quite a downgrade but it was hard to tell.

Kiwior did well and Zinchenko was fine until in-form winger Amad Diallo came on. He caused him plenty of problems but David Raya was not tested from open play. His best save denied a Matthijs de Ligt header from a Bruno Fernandes free-kick and United’s best move was from a set-piece on the edge of the box. It was tidy but the scoring opportunity fell to Antony.

This was a free hit for Amorim, really, and fans won’t lose any sleep tonight over a 2-0 defeat away to Arsenal. It is a tricky December for United but at least they won’t be playing against a team so capable from set-pieces every week.

They will be content but Arsenal will be delighted. They weren’t at their best and won, while Liverpool finally dropped some points on a mental night at St James’ Park.

Man City: Erling Haaland ‘not good enough’ with one Pep Guardiola transfer mistake identified

    Man City striker Erling Haaland

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Rafael van der Vaart has hit out at Erling Haaland as the Manchester City forward is “not good enough”.

Following his £51m move to Man City in 2022, Haaland has established himself as one of the best strikers in the world as he’s scored 107 goals in his 117 appearances across all competitions.

This season, the 24-year-old has 17 goals in his 19 appearances across all competitions, but he’s scored just once in his last eight Premier League outings.

Haaland’s ongoing dip in form has come at a poor time for Man City as Pep Guardiola’s side are winless in seven matches heading into Wednesday’s home clash against Nottingham Forest.

Man City are currently 16th in the Premier League form table. Van ver Vaart thinks Haaland is just a “normal player”, while Ilkay Gundogan “was not what they needed in the summer.

“Take away his pace, I see Erling Haaland as a normal player,” Van der Vaart said.

READ: Phil Foden has gone to sh*t along with Newcastle and Aston Villa pairs

“Technique-wise, he’s not good enough and he can get away with it when City are on form but not when they’re struggling.

“I just think he’s missing something that those top, top strikers have. I might get criticised for that opinion, but I don’t see him at the same level as the top strikers I played with, like Ruud van Nistelrooy.

“Manchester City need Erling Haaland at the moment, but where is he? That’s why he’s not among that select few world-class strikers.

“I think the intensity that Man City have shown under Pep Guardiola for so many seasons is over. They look very tired to me. You can see it in their faces, Kevin De Bruyne for example, they’re not fresh anymore.

“They need a rebuild. I’m not one who says they need to get rid of Pep, no chance. I believe in his coaching methods but they need to get their transfers right – Ilkay Gundogan was not what they needed in the summer.”

While Van der Vaart hit out at Haaland, he lauded Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, who is one of the 20 best footballers out of contract in 2025. The pundit reckons the experienced attacker is the best player int he world at the moment.

“I think so, yes, [Mohamed] Salah is the best,” Van der Vaart added.

“I am a big fan of [Kylian] Mbappe but he is not showing it at the moment.

“You have Vinicius Jr too, but I think that Salah has been consistent for so many years. You can see he feels really at home at Liverpool and he should stay.

“It’s the same with [Trent] Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, they should stay at Liverpool too. Liverpool is a huge club that is doing really well at the moment and I only see Real Madrid as the club you never say no to.”

  • Liverpool ‘won’t touch’ Marc Guehi after rainbow armband row

Liverpool ‘won’t touch’ Marc Guehi after rainbow armband row

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi and Sam Morsy

Marc Guehi and Sam Morsy are still dominating the Mailbox but one Liverpool fan clearly wouldn’t want him anywhere near his club.

Send your views on this – and the midweek football – to theeditor@football365.com

    Has Marc Guehi screwed himself?
Interesting to read all the comments on Morsy and Guehi. I’m impressed at G Thomas, Mithram and Clive not understanding the point of the argument to the point it almost appears intentional. It’s personal beliefs yes, but its’ hiding behind the defence of ‘my religion tells me to’ as if it’s not his fault.

So yes G Thomas, Morsy is saying he’s homophobic but without actually saying it. No Mithran, being born into discriminatory beliefs is not a defence. And you certainly don’t have to physically/verbally abuse someone before you a considered a racist/homophobe etc Clive. Simple gestures like this from Morsy and Guehi do all the talking. Also, freedom of speech is not the same as saying anything without repercussion.

This gesture from Morsy and Guehi is an open, visible middle finger to anyone not straight and frankly I cant believe an armband is causing such a problem for these two. If it’s such a burden then they should have just passed armband on for a week or two. As a club captain, the duties spread far and representing the club is one of them.

You don’t get to pick and choose what responsibilities you have and don’t get to pick and choose what bits of your religion you can uphold without moving. What are they worried about? Wearing an armband doesn’t out them as gay and nor does it suggest they partake in any activities that are. It’s not some magic fabric that ‘turns’ them gay either. It’s just a bit weird for them to be so afraid of it.

    Incidentally, I’ve written to Ipswich to ask why its ok for the club captain to be outspoken on this topic, but ok with gambling and alcohol. He is permitted to wear a shirt without a sponsor – Chelsea had a whole team of them this season remember. Why not just do that Mr Morsy? Or Mr Guehi? I cant balance the idea that a one off gesture will send them to a lifetime in purgatory but a whole season is absolutely fine. Just for reference;

    • Morsy played over 30 times for Middlesbrough in the 2020-21 season where their kit sponsor was gambling company 32Red
    • Morsy also played over 40 times for Wigan Athletic in the 2019-20 season where their kit sponsor was gambling company kb88.
    • ITFC are currently partnered with gambling company 8xbet, who also are a sister company of gambling firm BK8 recently exposed as having overtly explicit adult advertising
    • In the two seasons preceding Morsy’s arrival at the club, ITFC’s kit was sponsored by gambling company Magical Vegas
    • Morsy has also played in the FA Cup when it was sponsored by Budweiser

Alcohol, gambling and immodest behaviour. All sins, all denounced by Islam, all absolutely fine to turn a blind eye to. But an armband for a one off game is the line that cant be crossed? This isn’t religion, it’s personal prejudice masquerading as religion and it’s admitting it without actually saying the words.

But now I also think of implications for the two of them. Morsy is 33 and has 18 months to go on his contract, he’ll likely see it out and drop down the leagues for the last few years of his career so likely won’t have to face this again. But Marc Guehi? Has he just wrecked his chances of a big move now? Of the clubs that are a step up and can afford him and also need a new CB – Liverpool won’t touch him now, maybe Newcastle but they might be shopping a bit cheaper. Chelsea possibly but they already have a fair few CBs on the books.

Also wonder about England, would it be possible he’s slipped down the rankings in terms of selection? Has he now put himself firmly in the bracket of “on stand by for tournaments”, the kind of player who is picked in the initial 30 group but not in the final 23? I’m probably over thinking the repercussions to be honest but the final comment I’d leave is that Messrs Guehi and Morsy (and some mailbox contributors) do need to understand what tolerance truly is.

How can Sam Morsy be proved ‘right’?
G Thomas in the Mailbag has said that “history will prove” Sam Morsy “right” once “this virtue signalling nonsense is long forgotten.”

I would love for G Thomas to elaborate on exactly what is going to happen in the next few years to lead to this situation? Does he think that gay people will simply get fed up with being gay and stop? Or perhaps they will be eradicated instead and we can forget all about them?

This is the thing with these right-wing snowflakes. Scratch the surface of their “concern for freedom of speech” act even a tiny bit and you reveal a totally intolerant ideology which literally denies the existence of people that aren’t like them.

LGBT people exist, and will continue to do so. They play in your football team, they sit beside you in the stands, they sit across from the dinner table from you at Christmas. Yes, even you G Thomas.

How history could possibly prove Sam Morsy “right” in this case is beyond me, bar a total and violent campaign of intolerance and oppression. If that’s what you want, at least say it with your chest, and stop hiding behind this paper-thin veneer of Defender of Free Speech. No one buys it.

…Lots of the “you say you’re tolerant, but then you criticise the intolerant” ‘argument’ in the mailbox this morning. Learn to take some criticism, you whiny, whiny babies.

…Nice to hear from G Thomas, The Netherlands; “Look at the hatred on the pro-Palestinian and trans-activists’ faces when they are demonstrating”.

I would encourage Mr Thomas to research how many Palestinian footballers have been murdered during the last 14 months by the country still allowed to remain in football despite these crimes, and get back to us all on what real “hatred” looks like.

    Kind regards,

…There is a beautiful asymmetry going on here that the usual EDL-lite Brexit crowd fail to miss, because bigotry tends to produce hilarious situations like these!

On the one hand, we have the “we need to talk about immigration SMALL BOATS” crowd, the ones who are first to jump on any negative news item featuring Muslims and “grooming gangs”. They of course, ignore that publicly available Home Office statistics show that grooming gang offences are overwhelmingly committed by white men – the narrative is set! Who needs facts when selective cherry-picking will do! What we are usually instead told by fans of former Home Secretary Suella Braverman is that “Islam is incompatible with British values” (or as Kendrick would say, “They’re Not Like Us”!)

So imagine the hilarious paradox we now witness, when we suddenly find out that in fact, Islam CAN be “compatible with British Values” – but only when it involves someone Muslim punching down on protected minorities or women! Got it. So it’s “Woke” to care about showing representation for the LGBTQ+ community by simply wearing a f****g armband because “FREE SPEECH”.

But of course, it definitely is NOT Woke when our dear FAKE TOMMY ROBINSON PATRIOTS, are using Stasi-like language to denounce and harangue anyone who chooses to exercise their right to wear, or not wear, a Poppy. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

Bigotry as ever, dressed up as freedom of choice, by those who usually least believe in Real choice (like the right to asylum, the right for women to make choices about Their bodies, the right for a man to love another man etc)

    …Hooooo boy!

Some agitated folks in the mailbox this morning unhappy with Mr Tickner’s piece on Sam Morsy.

Gonna be careful not to descend into basic name calling and mud slinging here but basically here’s my view. I recognise tokenistic acts aren’t universally popular and need to be actually followed up with meaningful action but here’s the thing: opposing the possible (given the FA and PL, probable) tokenistic action without offering anything meaningful instead isn’t daring. It just continues the current situation of racism/homophobia/misogyny etc.

Unless of course you don’t think that is a problem, in which case YOU are the problem.

Personally, I have no issue with Morsy or any professional footballer opting out of a campaign but would want some other form of action to be taken by individual or club to address the issue at hand. No-one should be forced to wear an item under threat of abuse and pariah status………..like James McClean, for example.

    Don’t denigrate the right
Your mailbox this morning is introduced with the sub-heading “Sam Morsy dominates the Mailbox as the right come out in support of a Muslim because that’s how the ‘anti-woke’ agenda works now”.

It is well-established and correct that a paper or media outlet be able to hold and relay opinions, and I don’t think anyone who has read your site before could sensibly claim to be surprised at the site’s political views. If they don’t like it, they can read something else.

However, the editor may wish to reflect on the wording used. The implication is that anyone who has right-leaning political views would not normally “support a Muslim”. It also seems to implicitly reject the idea that they might be Muslim themselves.

There is a slightly bizarre opportunity on this football site for a reasoned political discussion to take place with written arguments from both sides. Some minds might be changed one way or the other based on it. But denigrating the entirety of “the right” in the manner you have risks losing that opportunity, and for what appears to be little to no gain.

…The Morsy/Guehi issue really should be a non-story where a progressive society is involved. People should be given all avenues to support and champion whatever causes they believe are worthy of such effort. Yes, even the unpopular right and more conservative-leaning of us must be given air to voice our beliefs. It’s the only way this species will find something of the peace that has eluded us so far.

It’s happened a couple of times in Ligue 1, a nation with a large contingent of immigrants and citizens with heritage from Muslim/Arab nations. Players refuse to join in or in some way blackout messages of support for the LGBT+ community.

I think it’s generally healthier when support for any cause, from the political to the religious is organic and all participants are fully aware of what it means when they lend their voices to these causes.

I respect McLean for refusing to play with a poppy on his chest. He decided against joining remembrance and support for that particular cause and he is well within his rights to do this.

As this website and many other well-meaning ones stress, players are human. Humans with varying backgrounds, beliefs and value systems. It’s what makes the PL such a draw, there is genuine diversity in every line-up, squad and even the administrative infrastructure of so many clubs.

Moralising to and telling these what they can and cannot do when it is convenient will not do much for any cause. And I’d much rather a player decline than puff their chest out only to sign up to play in a country where the cause they supposedly champion is criminalised.
    Emmanuel, Abuja
P.S. The news about United players declining to wear a jacket on Mazraoui’s behalf is just coming out and is further proof of concept. Let people champion the causes they believe in. It’s the only way we’ll all learn.

    Free speech and all that
A reminder on what free speech means.

Sam Morsy is allowed to not wear an armband.

We’re allowed to call him a bigot as a result.

    Both sides represent free speech.

I agree with Tickner, you may not – this is also free speech.

    Kind regards,
    A Grown Up
    (P.s. Forest doing great, woo!)

    It’s just gesture politics
Just my two cents on the recent Morsy/Guehi controversy.

Firstly, like poppies, if players are forced to wear something under threat of punishment or opprobrium, the so-called show of support doesn’t mean anything. If I was gay, I’d rather players were allowed to make their own decision and NOT wear an armband than wear one under compulsion.

But my main point is, do these gestures really achieve anything meaningful? Is any homophobe really going to look at these trinkets and think, “Well, I didn’t approve of homosexuality before, but now that I’ve seen these laces…”?

Perhaps a better gesture would be for clubs and players to donate some of their ample cash to projects that support these causes?

    Kind regards,
    Sam E

…A few years ago I was buying some Dreamies cat treats and the package had a rainbow banner on it with a “proudly supporting LGBTQ rights” message. Dreamies are made by Mars, who sell a multitude of products in countries like Saudi Arabia. They’re not proudly supporting anything, it’s just marketing. There’s little difference with individuals, particularly in our hyper-individualised, self-promoting online world.

Taking the knee. Rainbow armbands. Rainbow laces. Setting your profile picture to a black square. Commenting “This.” under some post or other. Whilst the intentions are no doubt noble, it is achieving nothing at all because nothing is at stake. Those rainbow armbands are sanctioned by the league, Sky run a banner for BLM etc. You’re not “sticking it to the man” when “the man” is quite happy to platform you.

These things have meaning when there is something on the line. Footballers folded when faced with a booking in Qatar. Imagine what the league’s response would be if a player specifically called out Qatar over LGBTQ rights or their treatment of migrant workers and beIn Sports threatened to pull their rights package? He’d be dragged over the coals and it wouldn’t happen again.

All these are empty gestures, usually sold under a guise of something like “raising awareness”, but all they do is make the individual person/company look or feel better whilst doing nothing tangible at all. If you want to make a change, invest your most precious commodity: time.

Get involved with or setup an LGBTQ supporters group, engage with your club about their provisions for disabled fans; whatever your specific cause is, actually get your hands dirty and try and make a difference. Otherwise, you’re just pointing at banners and slogans and doing nothing at all.

In other words, being passive progressive.

Liverpool: ‘Reason’ for contract ‘impasse’ predicted as expert hits out at FSG – ‘very odd decision’

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk

A football finance expert has offered his thoughts on why Liverpool have reached an “impasse” with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

The Liverpool trio are among the 20 best footballers due to be out of contract in 2025 and it remains to be seen whether they will pen an extension.

Alexander-Arnold is being heavily linked with a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid as they are in the market for a right-back to be a long-term replacement for Spain international Dani Carvajal.

Meanwhile, fellow Liverpool stars Salah and Van Dijk have been linked with big-money moves to the Saudi Pro League.

The uncertainty surrounding the Liverpool trio remains, but they have enjoyed a sensational start to the 2024/25 campaign under new head coach Arne Slot. They beat Manchester City 2-0 on Sunday to remain nine points clear at the top of the Premier League.

READ: Lazy Liverpool and negligent Newcastle: Every Premier League club’s worst transfer mistake in 2024

However, football finance expert Stefan Borson has hit out at Liverpool after their ‘very odd decision’ to let Alexander-Arnold, Salah and Van Dijk’s contracts run down.

In an interview with Football Insider, he has also given a “good reason” for the current “impasse” between Liverpool and the players.

“Liverpool know the situation with those three players,” Borson told Football Insider. “I don’t really understand it, to be honest. I don’t see how you would let that situation brew all the way through until the transfer window.

“We are now in December and you have got probably your best three players all out of contract at the end of the season. They are all saying to the press they haven’t agreed a deal, and they are all giving a variety of indications.

“It’s not harming them on the pitch very much, but I think it’s a very odd situation. I can’t really understand it.”

“I don’t know why they wouldn’t want to sort these deals and get them all wrapped up. Salah and Van Dijk seem very keen to stay, maybe not Alexander-Arnold.

“But the idea as is sort of hinted that the Liverpool ownership don’t understand the situation or haven’t got a clear understanding of what to do is obviously ridiculous.

“They clearly know how good these players are and, if they don’t sign a contract, they are going to leave.

“They know all the information. It’s not complicated, so there must be good reason why they are at an impasse.

“Unfortunately, I suspect it’s because the players are asking for too much money.”
