  • Tyler Dibling and semi-automated offsides are two godsends for the Premier League

Tyler Dibling and semi-automated offsides are two godsends for the Premier League

    VAR and Tyler Dibling

VAR provided more confusion in Southampton’s draw at Brighton and left us begging for semi-automated offsides to come to the Premier League.

Cameron Archer’s goal and Southampton limbs in the Brighton away end were all for nothing because Adam Armstrong was offside from Ryan Fraser’s cross and was ‘deemed to be impacting Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s ability to play the ball’. There is a reason the Premier League Match Centre X account does not allow comments on their posts. What a load of s**t.

Four minutes and 27 seconds it took for the offside to be decided by those at Stockley Park. At that point, the nothing phrase ‘clear and obvious’ simply goes out of the window. Injured Saints goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was not happy, posting on social media: ‘You can not be serious’.

The wait benefits literally nobody and the more time ticks on, the more sweat drips from the poor and inept official responsible for drawing those pesky lines.

Semi-automated offsides can not come soon enough and should help turn the tide with more people against VAR now than when it was first introduced in 2019. Games will flow better, fans and players won’t have to anxiously wait for the outcome of sometimes blatant offside decisions for several minutes. It will be a blessing for the Premier League just as it has been for the Champions League.

The delaying of its introduction is very frustrating and is only turning more people against VAR – which the Premier League will never get rid of. They are dying on this hill.

Johnny Nic is obviously one person who is completely against the technology and you would struggle to blame him these days – there are lots of negatives. There are also positives, though, and I am someone who thinks getting rid of it would be very silly.

Semi-automated offsides will take away the most scrutinised aspect of VAR, making life smoother for the officials, players and fans. Offside will become the black and white rule it is designed to be. We need it and we need it now.

Anyway, the VAR narrative is tiring at this stage. A football match took place and lots of things happened. Let’s move on to Tyler Dibling. We are in awe.

The boy is special, giving Kaoru Mitoma his latest lesson in dribbling. He thought learning more of the literal ins and outs were beneath him but that was a masterclass from the Southampton teenager, who is the latest to break onto the scene from the Saints highly-reputable youth academy.

Dibling has been a shining light in a miserable campaign for Southampton, making a name for himself by winning a penalty against Manchester United and kicking on from there after people started to notice him. He won another penalty against ‘Big Six’ opposition in Liverpool on Sunday and probably had his best performance of the season against Brighton on Friday.

👉 Big Weekend: Liverpool v Man City, Aston Villa, Odegaard, Dawson, Yorkshire, Der Klassiker

His tantalising display was not enough to inspire his side’s first away win of the season but he is getting better each game and will be the reason Southampton are not considered dead and buried by Christmas, if they get a few big results in December.

If the opening 13 matches are anything to go by, Southampton will go down but Dibling won’t be going down with them.

There are some rumours that the 18-year-old gets homesick, which is why his time at Chelsea lasted from July 2022 to September 2022. It was probably for the best anyway and there is no doubt in our minds that the Blues will go for him again at the end of the season.

Dibling’s ability to get out of tight spaces, carry the ball, nutmeg his humiliated opponents and push the Saints up the pitch is remarkable for a player of his experience. He is playing with the lack of fear characteristic of a low-socked teenager and we do not want that to change.

Southampton have a very clear philosophy centred on patience and keeping the ball but criticised manager Russell Martin has allowed Dibling to express himself. The minute a flair player has tactical shackles on him is when the game is not worth watching.

For all of the 18-year-old’s hard work, Southampton remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League, which was the only possible outcome having come to the Amex with four points, half the amount 19th have.

These teams need an X-factor in attack to survive, like Leeds United had with Raphinha and Wolves now have with Matheus Cunha. Dibling might not be on that level yet and the supporting cast might be a level below Leeds and Wolves’, but he gives them a fighting chance and will put smiles on faces at St Mary’s even when their annual 9-0 defeat arrives.

Brighton, meanwhile, did not create enough in front of goal. They had a great opportunity Yukinari Sugawara lost possession on the edge of his box with goalkeeper Joe Lumley out of position. Thankfully for the visitors, Mitoma took it on early and shot wide.

There was not enough creativity on a night most people expected to be comfortable but these dropped points will go under the radar because of one big negative in VAR and one glowing positive in Tyler Dibling.

  • Man Utd transfer: Euro giants to ‘offer’ ex-PL duo in swap deal for Joshua Zirkzee

Man Utd transfer: Euro giants to ‘offer’ ex-PL duo in swap deal for Joshua Zirkzee

    Man Utd forward Joshua Zirkzee

Serie A giants Juventus are prepared to offer former Premier League duo Douglas Luiz and Danilo to Man Utd for Joshua Zirkzee in January, according to reports.

The Red Devils have made a terrible start to the new Premier League season with Erik ten Hag losing his job after winning just three of the opening nine matches.

New manager Ruben Amorim took his first training session at Man Utd less than a fortnight ago after interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy added four points to their total during his two games in charge.

Amorim drew his first match in charge 1-1 against Ipswich Town on Sunday with Marcus Rashford’s opener cancelled out by a deflected long-range effort from Omari Hutchinson.

Man Utd are now 12th in the Premier League table with only Everton, Crystal Palace and Southampton scoring fewer goals than the Red Devils so far this season.

Rashford now has two Premier League goals this term, while Rasmus Hojlund and Zirkzee both have one each, with the latter coming in for a lot of criticism after his summer move from Bologna.

There have already been reports that INEOS and some of the Man Utd board view Zirkzee as a ‘lost cause’ with the Red Devils looking to ship him out in January.

The Netherlands international has been linked with a number of Serie A clubs, including Juventus, and now the Old Lady are reportedly set to ramp up their interest in January.

Italian website Calciomercato claims that talks between Juventus and Man Utd ‘could be started to bring’ to take Zirkzee to Turin with ex-Man City defender Danilo and former Aston Villa midfielder Luiz possible makeweights in a deal.

It is said Juventus’ transfer priority with Danilo ‘may not be so much a financial gain from his transfer as saving on his salary’ and a potential transfer for Luiz is also ‘a utopia’ currently.

The report adds that a loan deal away from Juventus ‘maybe back in the Premier League and maybe in exchange’ for Zirkzee could be on the cards for the Brazilian duo.

Amorim, who won his second match as Man Utd boss by coming back from 2-1 down to beat Bodo/Glimt 3-2 in the Europa League group stage on Thursday, held a pre-match press conference on Friday ahead of the Red Devils’ match at Old Trafford against Everton.

When asked about Mason Mount, Amorim told reporters: “He is working really hard. You have to understand the human also. He wants this really bad. That is the most important thing. He proved to all of you he is a talented player.

“He was a European champion. We believe a lot in him. He has to stay fit. All the guys in the team are quality players. They had to improve. He did a great job. You see some moments details where you can see Mason Mount is a proper footballer. We believe a lot in him. I especially believe a lot in Mason Mount.”

Amorim was then asked what he expects against Everton, to which he responded: “Win. I am hoping to win. It is going to be a different match with a lot of fighting, long balls, second balls.

“A quality coach who understands the league and the moment of the opponents. We need to have the ball because we have a short time to recover and we need to rotate the team. I hope for a win and see different things in my team, improve like we did from Ipswich to now, with Everton, without training. I expect to see different things.”

  • Amorim claims Man Utd stars ‘can’t concentrate for more than 12 minutes’ as one player ‘can’t run’

Amorim claims Man Utd stars ‘can’t concentrate for more than 12 minutes’ as one player ‘can’t run’

    Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim has told reporters that his players “cannot concentrate on a video for more than 12 minutes” in a worrying update.

The Red Devils have made a terrible start to the new Premier League season with just four wins in their first 12 matches.

Erik ten Hag was sacked just nine games into the new campaign with Ruud van Nistelrooy taking over for a few matches before Amorim’s appointment earlier this month.

Amorim started life as the new Man Utd head coach with a 1-1 draw away at Ipswich Town on Sunday before his side came from 2-1 down to beat Bodo/Glimt 3-2 in a Europa League group stage clash on Thursday.

There have been concerns that Amorim’s attempts to deploy his 3-4-3 formation could be tricky without some of his own players and, with the busy festive period coming up, three matches a week are a regular occurrence, leading to fewer opportunities to problem solve on the training pitch.

And now Daily Mail journalist David Wheeler has revealed a slightly worrying update, although he claims Amorim was “joking”, with the Man Utd boss admitting that his side “cannot concentrate on a video for more than 12 minutes”.

Wheeler wrote on X: “Ruben Amorim has revealed that he is literally walking Manchester United’s players through training drills to try and speed up their learning of his football philosophy – joking that they cannot concentrate on a video for more than 12 minutes #mufc.”

Man Utd spent over £180m on five new players in the summer transfer window with Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui moving to Old Trafford.

Not many have been successes to date, with Mazraoui being the main hit, and former Scotland international Craig Burley doubts De Ligt will be in Amorim’s side long term as he “can’t run”.

Burley said on ESPN: “What do we know? We know that De Ligt can’t run, he’s not the quickest. Those balls over the top of the left side, the centre-back gets caught out, then he struggles to get across and help because of his mobility.”

Former Man Utd striker Louis Saha has been impressed by Amorim’s “communication” skills so far and the “humility” that he has shown.

Saha told Slotswise: “The thing I have been most impressed with Amorim so far is his communication. I love the way he speaks about football and Manchester United. What he has said so far has shown humility, but also the confidence that is required to be a top manager.

“He is definitely someone who understands that some players need freedom to express themselves, while others need to be rigid and solid.

“We have so far seen some little signs of patterns that I really like, but the main thing we need is that consistency. We need Amorim to have the conviction to say we will play one system and give it time for the players to learn and master this and get it right, which is where I think ten Hag failed.”

Man Utd: Merson makes ‘destroyed by four or five goals’ claim as he makes Everton prediction

    Paul Merson on Man Utd

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has “a sneak feeling” that Everton could get something at Man Utd despite predicting a Red Devils win at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have made a terrible start to the new season with Erik ten Hag losing his job just nine games in before Ruud van Nistelrooy steadied the ship for a few matches.

New Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim had an underwhelming start with a 1-1 draw away at Ipswich Town last weekend, although the Portuguese boss had limited time to work with his players in the lead up to the fixture.

Amorim managed a more positive result on Thursday night with Man Utd coming from 2-1 down against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League to win 3-2, thanks to two goals from Rasmus Hojlund.

Merson was not impressed by Man Utd against Ipswich and reckons one of the top teams would have “destroyed” the Red Devils.

Making his prediction for the match against Everton at the weekend, Merson told Sportskeeda: “Nothing changed for Manchester United last week in my opinion. Ipswich were by far the better team! I think even Ruben Amorim was shocked by what happened.

“If they don’t start winning games, Amorim will have to start answering a lot more questions whether he likes it or not. That is just how big this club is and how the Premier League is in a nutshell.

“I’m not entirely convinced about Manchester United’s new system under Amorim. After a point in that game, you would’ve thought Ipswich were the bigger club and not United, that’s how it went. You could say everyone was away on international duty and he did not have enough time. But if that performance was against one of the big boys in the league, Manchester United would have been destroyed by four or five goals!

“Everton are a team who have a special X-factor in them. They always have that one fixture every season when they just spring to life and surprise us. I’m going for a United win, but I can’t help but admit that I have a sneak feeling about Everton. Prediction: Manchester United 2-0 Everton.”

Reflecting on his start at Man Utd on Thursday night, Amorim told reporters: “I know it will be tough. We will have problems in the future but that is normal in every club and with every coach.

“We are changing in the middle of the season and we know that we don’t have time to train. I believe in the people, I believe in the players, I believe in the staff and I feel at home. I have a job to do and I know how to do that job.

“You have to be lucky, sometimes the ball hits the post and goes in so these small things will help us. I am confident because I believe in everyone in this squad.”

Amorim's success as Manchester United manager: Bodo / Glimt defeated, but the Red Devils ' problems are still obvious

In the first match under Ruben Amorim, Manchester United won a strong-willed victory over Bodo/Glimt with a score of 3:2. Goilund's double helped the team avoid defeat to the Norwegian club.

Against Bodo/Glimt, who have already beaten Porto and Braga in the Europa League this season, Amorim's team led the way, allowed the match to turn the tide, and only in the second half equalized the score, winning 3:2.

Passes UNN with reference to independent.

About 25 minutes after his first game at Old Trafford, the new Manchester United manager may have wondered if this greeting was more of a warning. His new team lost 2-1 to the club from the Arctic Circle. The inconsistency in the actions of the famous British club was felt as before. According to The Independent, the self-destructive streak that overshadowed the reign of Eric ten Hag is still holding on. Earlier, Manchester United lost twice to Budo/Glimt, and again the result could be as painful as the worst for its predecessor, the Portuguese specialist.

    for Reference

In the midst of a weak campaign in the Premier League, Manchester United decided to change their technical team and invited Portuguese Ruben Amorim. In the past, Amorim is a professional football player who played as a midfielder. As a player, he won 10 titles with Benfica, and also made 14 appearances for the Portuguese national team, playing at two World Cups. Now he is a football coach. Since November 11, 2024, Amorim has been the head coach of the English club Manchester United.

In the match against the Norwegian club in the Europa League, Amorim made six changes to the squad compared to the previous game against Ipswich, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

“Dynamo breaks away from Oleksandriya, defeat in Lviv, air raids: UPL round 14 resultsNov 26 2024, 07:00 AM • 13260 views

It should be noted that despite the awkward start of the game with "Bodo/Glimt", some players react to the mode change. Example: Rasmus Goilund. The Dane refused Amorim's debut as head coach, but nevertheless responded to the recall, organizing the opening in the first minute, and then made a winning double.

Fast-paced starts are one of the best pages of Amorim's early days. As a result, the score of the match Manchester United 3-2 Bodo/Glimt: Goilund scored twice in a not perfect game for the whole team. Thus, Manchester United demonstrated the ability to adapt. Maybe this is what the new coach really needs right now.

Hargreaves insists on Amorim change for Arsenal; names Man Utd sub who should ‘walk into’ the team

    Amorim Man Utd

Owen Hargreaves believes Ruben Amorim will have to change his Manchester United formation if they’re to get a result against Arsenal or other superior sides after their 3-2 victory over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday,

Alejandro Garnacho opened the scoring inside the opening minute at Old Trafford but United found themselves behind in the 23rd minute before a double from Rasmus Hojlund ensured all three points for the Red Devils.

Amorim is famed for his 3-4-3 system and he again opted for his favoured formation, this time playing Manuel Ugarte and Bruno Fernandes in midfield with Mason Mount and Garnacho behind Hojlund.

But Hargreaves doesn’t think Amorim currently has the personnel to play two in midfield against the top teams ahead of their clash with Arsenal in the Premier League on Wednesday.

“I think they’ve got a lot of good players. Do they have the players capable of winning the Premier League or Champions League? Probably not. That’s going to take time to sort the recruitment out,” Hargreaves told TNT Sports.

“The most important thing is that they get results. Obviously Everton at the weekend is a tough game but at home you’d expect them [United] to win that game.

“Tough fixtures, especially the Arsenal one coming up after that, but they need to find a way to get results. Today they didn’t play brilliantly but they found a way to win the game which is the most important thing.

“I don’t think he has the personnel that he had at Sporting.

“I think if you’re going to play two in there [midfield], they need to be two super-athletes and cover the distances.

“I’m not sure they have that as such. I think they’ve got some really good players, different players but he might have to tweak it that maybe one of the No.10s drops in and one of the wing-backs gets a little bit higher for the width.

“But I think playing two in there against an Arsenal or a [Manchester] City, I think that’s going to be really, really difficult.

“I think it’s a work in progress, we need to be patient but we’re getting there.”

Hargreaves also believes Kobbie Mainoo, who is yet to feature in either of Amorim’s games as manager on his return from injury, will play a key role in United’s midfield going forward.

“It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Kobbie Mainoo, such a special young player, you’d think he’d kind of almost walk into that midfield,” Hargreaves said.

“Ugarte I thought played really well today, there are a lot of people who are going to get opportunities.

“It was nice to see Hojlund step up and score some goals. He’s a super talented young man, I think there’s so much potential in him and that’s the good thing about Ruben Amorim, he’s brilliant with young players, we saw what he did with Viktor Gyokeres, I’m sure he could do that with Rasmus Hojlund as well.

“There are so many different options to come. It’ll just be exciting to get [Leny] Yoro back fit, [Luke] Shaw back fit, [Noussair] Mazraoui plays amazing every time he plays, there’s a lot of potential here.”

  • Hojlund can solve one big problem for Man United – and make fixing others easier too

Hojlund can solve one big problem for Man United – and make fixing others easier too

Rasmus Hojlund celebrates the first of his two goals in a Europa League win for Manchester United against Bodo/Glimt

There will be plenty of ‘only Europa League’ and ‘only Bodo/Glimt’ poo-pooing after this, but every game under a new manager is a learning experience.

And there was plenty to take from Manchester United’s first win under Ruben Amorim on a night that certainly crystallised a few ideas about which players stand to win and lose under the new manager.

What this first home game showed beyond doubt, and we think in a way that exceeds any opposition caveats because Bodo are a decent Europa League team anyway, is that Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United are going to be more fun than Erik Ten Hag’s.

There is already greater urgency and purpose about their football, if not yet quite a full understanding of the requirements and responsibilities of a few new roles.

No points for working out the big winner on the night was Rasmus Hojlund after his two goals and assist, but he does look like perhaps the roundest peg in the roundest hole we’ve seen so far for Amorim’s United.

This is already a team now far more geared towards getting the most out of his pace, both in and out of possession. The first goal inside the first minute is obviously keeper-assisted, but it feels reasonable to ask whether Hojlund would have been tasked with bothering and hassling the keeper into the error that handed Alejandro Garnacho the easiest of goals.

Hojlund’s own first goal was a wonder. Again, intelligent high pressing created the chance, with Noussair Mazraoui – another obvious winner under Amorim – winning the ball back high up the pitch and then having the ability and intelligence to do something useful with it once he had it.

Hojlund still had loads to do, mind, and the confidence required to even attempt the outlandish touch-and-finish he pulled off is encouraging in itself.

That was perhaps the moment that will bring Amorim most happiness from the night. If – and it remains a significant if – Hojlund can prove himself a reliably effective spearhead for this 3-4-2-1 formation then it could save United fortunes that can be invested elsewhere to plug some more conspicuous gaps.

Mazraoui, for his part, is just very obviously an excellent footballer. For all the folly of spending all that money in the summer on a manager who always looked doomed, at least in this case they’ve spent it on a player any manager of any style would be happy to accommodate. There are probably five positions in Amorim’s preferred formation where Mazraoui could do a bang-up job, and we may well see him prove it during a packed month before the transfer window opens.

In between those two wonderfully Amorim goals, though, came the equally clear warnings. United conceded twice in the space of four frantic, confused minutes and both exposed the limitations that exist within this squad for this shape.

It’s been pointed out time and again that Amorim’s Sporting side relied on non-stop running as well as technical ability from that double-6 pivot. Manuel Ugarte provided it tonight; Bruno Fernandes didn’t.

Too often it allowed a gap to grow between the centre-backs and midfield, gaps Bodo to their credit were able to exploit. Two excellent finishes were nevertheless both assisted by slapdash United defending.

The acres between defence and midfield made it too easy for the equaliser to be teed up and stroked home from around the edge of the box.

And the second goal owed a little to players coming to terms with this new shape and players just coming to terms with playing football again. Lisandro Martinez had bolted upfield – which isn’t necessarily a bad thing when there are three centre-backs. But Tyrell Malacia, gingerly making his way back into the starting XI after his injury horrors, didn’t get the memo to slot in from his post at left wing-back.

United were punished heavily for that bad five minutes, but they were much better after the break.

It would be tempting to put that improvement down to a bravura tactical flourish from Amorim. We’re really not sure it was. It still looked pretty much like a fluid 3-4-3 in the second half; the key difference was that Diogo Dalot (who has played all of the football) replaced Malacia (who has played none of the football) and simply took up far better positions. Maybe that was a managerial directive, but it might just as easily have been a different player taking a slightly different, and better approach to his role.

It still wasn’t perfect by any means. United did have to cling on a little bit at the end having passed up a few chances for a killer fourth goal. And it was only Bodo/Glimt. We’re still not remotely sure Bruno Fernandes is really suited to any of the central roles in this shape, and we’re very sure indeed that Antony is not and never will be a right wing-back.

But there are undoubtedly glimpses of the things that might work. Mason Mount has had a right result for club and country, Ugarte is clearly starting to get the hang of it after taking some time to adapt to his new surroundings. Mazraoui is just really excellent at football. These are all positives, but there’s no doubt that the biggest of the lost on what was, overall, an encouraging night was the performance of Hojlund.

If he can be this striker for United long-term, it solves one problem while making it far easier to address the others that remain.

Guardiola’s side have been without key players for much of the season, with Guardiola using that as a caveat for their poor performances and results, but a report in Spain claims the manager is also fed up with five of his players and wants to get rid in the winter window.

Matheus Nunes joined City at the start of last season in a £50m move from Wolves but barely played in his debut campaign and again looked set for a limited role this term before coming into the team in recent weeks.

The Portugal international started four of City’s defeats before being dropped for the 4-0 thrashing by Spurs and the report claims he’s ‘without doubt one of the most serious mistakes’ made in Guardiola’s time at City having ‘never met expectations’.

Mateo Kovacic joined from Chelsea at the same point and has been used at the base of Guardiola’s midfield in the absence of Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, but he too is now up for sale having failed to ‘fit into the systems’ of Guardiola.

Nathan Ake will also be sold if an interested party offers £25m for the former Bournemouth defender, while the club also ‘won’t get in the way’ if an offer arrives for John Stones.

But the ‘big sale’ City are planning is that of Jack Grealish. The report adds:

‘He has been very irregular and has had many injuries, in addition to starring in several extra-sport scandals, and Guardiola’s patience has run out. It’s the big sale they’re preparing, and the English star has the doors open.’

Guardiola sparked concern when City’s draw with Feyenoord he was pictured clawing at his head and face before appearing on camera with scratches and a bloody cut on his nose.

The Spaniard brushed off his appearance in interviews, quipping about “self-harm” caused by a long nail.

And Enric Armengou, professor of psychiatry at the Abat CEU University in Barcelona, was enlisted to ease concerns.

“What happened with Guardiola speaks of the level of anxiety he has, but it is a specific event in moments of maximum tension,” he said.

“His behaviour was that of a man who is at his limit and regulated himself by hurting himself. Others might throw their notebook against the bench or kick a bottle.

“We should not give the matter greater significance because it was a moment of anger, which has no signs, due to the known antecedents, that it is a trend, so it should not be a problem.

“You cannot blame him for lack of sensitivity with problems of this type, he simply expressed himself with irony.

“I don’t think we can talk about a problem of that kind (loss of self-control). It would be excessive, otherwise we would see him with that behaviour in other areas. He is a man who lives the matches with intensity, but we have no evidence that he has ever lost his mind.”
