FIFA unveils updated Club World Cup trophy with unusual design and inscriptions

FIFA has unveiled an updated golden trophy for the Club World Cup that can be transformed. The surface of the cup is engraved with inscriptions in 13 languages, including Russian.

The International Football Federation (FIFA) has unveiled the updated FIFA Club World Cup trophy, which will be awarded to the winner of the revamped tournament. The trophy is made of gold and can be transformed from a shield into a multifaceted and orbital structure. Its surface is engraved with inscriptions, including in Russian. This is reported by the FIFA website, UNN reports.

"Created in collaboration with TiffanyAndCo, this trophy will be awarded for the first time to the winners of the revamped Club World Cup tournament to be held next year," FIFA said.

FIFA emphasized that the trophy represents the world of club football – a celebration of hope, excellence and pride, embodying the journey of every club, player and fan united by their passion for the beautiful game.

"Inspired by pioneering voyages, the Mendeleev periodic table, and astronomy, each glint of gold reflects the relentless pursuit of greatness. It unites the world and symbolizes the past, present and future, preserving the legacy of club football for future generations," FIFA added.

Federation President Gianni Infantino said that "the trophy had to be innovative, inclusive, pioneering and truly global, like this competition. The FIFA Club World Cup Trophy – a perfect equivalent to our iconic FIFA World Cup – is a revolutionary symbol of a bright, new future for club football inspired by the past.

The trophy is made of gold, and its surface is laser engraved with vivid images of the rich history and culture of the beautiful game, from dynamic players and fans to the date of FIFA's founding.

The inscriptions on the trophy are engraved in 13 languages, including Ancient Greek, Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian.

In particular, on one side of the trophy you can see an inscription in Russian: "football unites the world", although the Russian national team and Russian clubs were excluded from all tournaments under the auspices of FIFA and UEFA after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The cup also has a message for the champions: "For those who hold this trophy, history belongs to you. You have witnessed a moment that represents the pinnacle of club football, given to a few but celebrated by many.

    Addendum

The Club World Cup is the official successor to the Intercontinental Cup, which was played from 1960 to 2004. The first draw of the tournament took place in 2000, but due to the bankruptcy of the championship sponsor ISL, the second draw took place only 5 years later – in 2005.

Until 2025, only 8 teams took part in the tournament – the winners of the CONCACAF Champions League, CAF Champions League, AFC Champions League, AFC Champions League 2023 and the host country. First, the teams play in the playoff round and the top 2 teams advance to the semifinals, where they meet the winners of the Libertadores Cup and the Champions League.

Starting in 2025, the number of teams will increase to 32, divided into 8 groups. The tournament will be held in the United States next summer. Europe will be represented by 12 teams, including Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, PSG, Inter, Porto, Benfica, Borussia D, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, and Salzburg.

Real Madrid has the most victories at the Club World Cup with 5 trophies, and Cristiano Ronaldo is the tournament's top scorer with 7 goals.

The current winner of the trophy is Manchester City, which in 2023 made it to the tournament by winning the Champions League, where it defeated Brazilian Fluminense in the final.

  • Man Utd set for ‘first signing of Ruben Amorim era’ as Red Devils ‘confident’ of beating Man City, Chelsea

Man Utd set for ‘first signing of Ruben Amorim era’ as Red Devils ‘confident’ of beating Man City, Chelsea

    Amorim Nypan Man Utd

Manchester United have reportedly identified (another) ‘first player of the Ruben Amorim era’ at Old Trafford, and are ‘confident’ of beating Manchester City to the punch.

Amorim’s arrival as Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor has inevitably set the rumour mill turning ahead of the January transfer window, despite reports suggesting he will have limited funds to spend amid the Red Devils’ concerns over breaching FFP regulations.

Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen, Juventus’ Danilo, Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri, Chelsea star Christopher Nkunku and even Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala have all been tipped to be the Portuguese manager’s ‘first signing’, with Viktor Gyokeres only avoiding that label because Amorim himself ruled out a January move.

Now TBR claim United are ‘confident’ if signing Rosenbord teenager Sverre Nepal.

The 17-year-old has already made 58 appearance for the Norwegian side, contributing 12 goals and 11 assists from central midfield.

United have been ‘determined to beat Manchester City to Nypan’ and ‘they’re now confident’ of doing that following Amorim’s arrival.

Nypan is available for around £10m, though add-ons could take the deal closer to £20m, and the report claims Rosenborg have ‘told Nypan to begin choosing his next club once their season finishes in early December’.

    The report adds:

‘United are working to try and conclude a deal, with Nypan’s camp set to sit down and assess their options.

‘United are confident, they have been tracking the young Norwegian talent since he was 14/15-years-old, and he has been visited more than once.

‘However, the club knows the fact that they’ve not tied him down yet has left the door open to others.

‘Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle and Aston Villa have all had contact with Nypan’s representatives in recent months.

‘They are also joined by Man City’s owners the City Football Group and also BlueCo – Chelsea’s parent company.

‘Both clubs would prefer to see Nypan start his senior career away from England before eventually moving to the Premier League.’

Nypan would be competing with Manuel Ugarte for a spot in midfield should he make the move to United, and Amorim will be hoping to get the best out of the Uruguayan midfielder, who made his name under him at Sporting before moving to PSG and then United in the summer.

Other Sporting stars may well follow, but as Amorim pointed out after agreeing his United contract, a move for star striker Gyokeres may have to wait.

“I can’t make fun of it, right now, it was hard for me to leave, if I start joking about this Gyokeres situation I’ll get in trouble,” Amorim said on TNT Sports. “This is my city, this is my country, so I’ll respect it.

“Viktor has to stay until the end of the season, and then his life maybe is going somewhere else.”

  • Five in-form England hopefuls who STILL can’t get a call-up in dire straits

Five in-form England hopefuls who STILL can’t get a call-up in dire straits

Dwight McNeil among potential England players.

When Burnley keeper James Trafford and both Newcastle full-backs are getting England call-ups, you know that things are getting desperate.

Morgan Rogers finally got his first England call after entering his worst patch of form for Aston Villa, while Jarrod Bowen got a recall despite West Ham having a rotten start to the season.

We have come up with five uncapped England-eligible players whose performances this season might left them wandering when it’s their turn…

    Dwight McNeil (Everton)
Only two English players – Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer – have created more chances in the Premier League this season than McNeil, who was missing through injury when the Toffees played out that goalless grind against West Ham on Saturday. He has claimed three Premier League goals and three Premier League assists but would surely have more in the latter category if he was servicing a striker other than Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

McNeil has 10 England Under-21 caps so has pathway points but crucially, all those caps came under Aidy Boothroyd, with the then-Burnley winger turning 21 six months before Lee Carsley took charge. Unlucky.

    Sean Longstaff (Newcastle United)
With Declan Rice ruled out, Lee Carsley should perhaps have looked at the man who out-tackled him 6-2 when the pair met in Newcastle’s win over Arsenal last week, before out-playing Morgan Gibbs-White last weekend.

At the start of the season we thought Longstaff was keeping the Newcastle midfield seat warm for Sandro Tonali, but he has forced his way into the Newcastle starting line-up for perhaps their finest two performances and results of the season. New England call-up Lewis Hall calls him “underrated” and we have been as guilty as anyone.

It doesn’t help his cause that he has literally no England youth experience; he was on loan at Blackpool at the age of 21 and it’s only three years since Newcastle were willing to sell Longstaff to Everton for just £10m. They’re rather glad they didn’t right about now.

    Leif Davis (Ipswich Town)
“It would be a dream to play for England, play for my country,” said the Ipswich left-back last week. The problem? He a) plays for Ipswich Town and b) has never even been close to an England youth call-up, having come up with the Tractor Boys from League One.

There’s no doubt that a dearth of left-backs – Lewis Hall is the only dedicated left-back in the re-jigged England squad – should work in his favour, but successive England managers have now played centre-backs and right-backs on the left rather than look further down the Premier League table. Just ask Rico Henry.

    Liam Delap (Ipswich Town)
Only one English player has outscored Delap in the Premier League this season. As Cole Palmer has now pulled out of the England squad, Harry Kane is the only man currently available to Lee Carsley who is in better goalscoring form than the actual England Under-21 man.

As we wrote in Premier League winners and losers: ‘It really is a very good time to be a young English striker scoring Premier League goals. If England are – as seems likely – going to largely skip the post-Kane generation of strikers – your Watkinses, your Solankes – and move straight on to the next gen as happened with Kane himself when he usurped Wayne Rooney, then Delap has a clear run at it.’

    Ryan Yates (Nottingham Forest)
A starting midfielder for a top-six Premier League side would usually be a shoo-in for an England call and yet it would be a massive surprise if Yates was given his first England call-up. Even he says “it’s always a possibility” but does not sound convinced that ‘possible’ could ever become ‘probable’.

Was excellent v Chelsea and then Leicester City as Forest pulled themselves into an unlikely top-four spot but Yates is another who was breaking through in the Championship at the age of 21 rather than playing in a Man City or Man Utd development team. At 26, the dream is not yet over, but no central midfielder in Carsley’s current squad is over the age of 24.

Maybe Thomas Tuchel will look beyond England Under-21 pedigree…

  • Gary Neville claims ‘stitched up’ David Coote shouldn’t be ‘cancelled’ for ‘sloppy’ decision

Gary Neville claims ‘stitched up’ David Coote shouldn’t be ‘cancelled’ for ‘sloppy’ decision

Gary Neville before a Premier League match at Craven Cottage

Gary Neville says David Coote was “stitched up” and was “sloppy” but doesn’t deserve to be “cancelled” before a second video was released that may well change the pundit’s mind.

Coote has been suspended by the PGMOL after the Premier League referee was filmed by former Nottinghamshire cricket Ben Kitt calling Liverpool “sh*t” and Klopp a “German c*nt”.

But Neville didn’t think that video was enough to “cancel” Coote, claiming Kitt’s disparaging comments about scousers were more worthy of rebuke.

“It will bring great disappointment to David and the refereeing community,” Neville told The Overlap US. “He has called Jurgen Klopp the c-word which is obviously a very aggressive word.

“But I didn’t see anything within his words that told me he had influenced decisions in a wrong way, or that he was trying to do Liverpool over.

“I hope they can get through it. If there had been any suggestion that he was making decisions against Liverpool or another club, I would say he has to go. He has called a manager a word because he has a bad relationship with him and they have had an argument.

“It was very sloppy. I am sure it is something he will regret for the rest of his life. But from a point of view of cancelling him, I am not sure. The minute you cancel him as a Premier League referee, you are effectively cancelling him from the game. I am not sure any organisation would look at him and offer him the chance to join.

“I actually think the worst words in the video were said by the guy sat next to him – ‘I hate Scousers’. Because that demonstrates a hatred to a group of people, which includes Liverpool and Everton.

“David Coote never said those words himself. He has been stitched up and it is a mess. It looks like he got drunk and let his mate film him, which is stupid. We have all done silly things when we have had too many drinks.

“It could become impossible for him to go into Premier League grounds or referee Liverpool again. We know that certain referees don’t take charge of matches at Old Trafford or Anfield or at other grounds because of their allegiance. For David Coote to be removed from Liverpool games would be a good step.

“In employment law, if you call someone a name, it is a warning. I don’t feel it is a sacking or dismissal. Taking him off Liverpool games and giving him a final warning is what I think should happen, not to lose his entire career. I don’t feel it has crossed that line.”

Neville wasn’t privy to a second video, sent to The Sun by ‘a pal’ of Coote’s, in which the referee is seen snorting white powder while away officiating at Euro 2024.

The source also revealed that Coote told him he hates refereeing at Goodison Park and thinks Andy Robertson is a “Scottish pr*ck”.

They told The Sun: “I believe that the FA and the governing body of the referees have to make sure that the sport we all love is protected and being officiated by the right people. My message to David Coote is…there’s help out there.

“The video of him bad-mouthing Klopp didn’t surprise me at all.

“He said to me Liverpool would definitely not win the Premier League. It just makes me question the kind of people running the Prem. He also described Andy Robertson as a ‘Scottish prick’.

“He did say that the worst place to referee was Goodison Park due to the young Scousers screaming, shouting, swearing at him and calling every name under the sun before the games had even started. And he mentioned he hated going to Bournemouth because it was just such a long way away.

“He did mention about Coventry City versus Oxford United on a Friday night on Sky Sports. He couldn’t really be a**** with this game…the fact that he had to go and referee in front of an empty Ricoh Arena. He said ‘I’m a bit too big for this’.”

  • Mikel Arteta grabbed ex-Arsenal star and shouted ‘you betrayed me’ ahead of acrimonious exit

Mikel Arteta grabbed ex-Arsenal star and shouted ‘you betrayed me’ ahead of acrimonious exit

    Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he “felt hurt” by the way in which he left Arsenal and claims the tipping point was when Mikel Arteta ‘grabbed me and shouted: “You’ve betrayed me.”‘

Aubemeyang left Arsenal in January 2022 having scored 92 goals in 163 games for the club; 38 of them under Arteta.

But his relationship with the Gunners boss deteriorated sharply at the end of their time together at the Emirates.

The striker’s punctuality became a source of significant tension between the pair, and eventually led Aubameyang to leave the club for Barcelona on a free transfer.

Aubameyang told the Colinterview podcast that Arteta was initially “respectful”.

“I arrived late to a training session because I had an accident on the way to Colney (the club’s sports city),” he narrated. “Arteta did not choose me to play against Tottenham. Then he came to my house after the game and we had a frank conversation. It was respectful of him.”

The striker insists he takes his share of “responsibility” for the breakdown in the relationship but then revealed Arteta’s reaction to Aubameyang delaying his return after his mother suffered a stroker was the point of no return.

He said: “I never wanted to hurt Arteta or the club with my behaviour. I share the responsibility for what I’ve done. I felt hurt and it’s a shame I couldn’t continue being part of this project.

“My mother suffered a stroke and I delayed my return because I took her to her medical appointments,” he revealed. “When I arrived, Arteta finished his meeting. He grabbed me and shouted: ‘You’ve betrayed me. You can’t do this with everything we’re going through.'”

Aubameyang returned to the Premier League briefly, but flopped at Chelsea before 30 goals in 51 games for Marseille last term.

He is now with Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Pro League and has scored four goals in nine games, and will next be in action against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr after the international break.

Aubameyang previously explained what he experienced while he “stayed for a month while waiting for the move away” from Arsenal.

“I go home and the doctor calls me and says ‘Tomorrow, the coach doesn’t want you to be there’. I said okay, I knew the next match was coming and I said to myself: ‘Damn, once again everyone is going to talk about me, it’s going to be a mess, this is crazy’. I couldn’t understand it,” Aubemeyang added.

“The days pass and the doctor tells me: ‘Look, he doesn’t want you to be with the group anymore, but you will be able to come and train but separately’. I say to myself okay… And then afterwards, he calls me and we have a meeting so he can explain to me that firstly, he’s taking away the captain’s armband, and secondly, I’m no longer training with the group.

“Once again, he explains why he is against me during this period when it was complicated for the club. That I have to be an example and that I couldn’t do that. At that moment, I said: ‘I admit that I have my share of responsibility but the real cause I think you can understand if you are a little bit human. You can understand my move’.

“After that, it was over, I stayed for a month training on my own while waiting for the move away.”

Man City FFP: PL to ‘implement new rule’ as plan surfaces after ‘£30m’ blow with ‘appeal expected’

Man City and the Premier League logo

The Premier League reportedly may ‘implement a new rule’ and this could be made official once Manchester City’s Financial Fair Play case has concluded.

At the start of 2023, Man City were charged with breaching over 100 of the Premier League’s FFP rules. They were referred to an independent commission following a four-year probe into their conduct between 2009 and 2018.

Pep Guardiola‘s side have insisted on their innocence and it remains to be seen whether they will be found guilty as this case remains ongoing.

If found guilty, Man City could be given a huge fine, points deduction, transfer ban, expulsion or be stripped of their Premier League titles.

This case has already dragged on for much longer than most would have liked as it is a far more complicated case than the ones involving Everton and Nottingham Forest last season.

READ: ‘Let’s drop the hysterics’ as Man City owners are just copying Arsenal

A new report from Football Insider claims the Premier League are planning to ‘implement a new rule’ after Man City’s case.

It is claimed that the Premier League ‘could look to bring in new rules ensuring its legal fees are paid for in any court battles it wins after the Manchester City 115 charges case’.

This revelation has been made after it emerged that the Premier League spent around £30m on legal cases against its own clubs last season. The report explains.

‘Sources have told Football Insider the Premier League could now propose new rules are brought in to ensure the majority of its legal fees are paid for by a club if they are proven to have committed a financial breach.

‘Any such measure would need to receive the backing of two-thirds of the top-flight clubs to be approved.

‘Man City are expected to appeal against any potential punishment after their lawyers have been adamant the club haven’t done anything wrong since the charges were handed out last year, potentially adding to the Premier League’s associated legal costs.’

In August, former Man City financial advisor Stefan Borson explained why he does not think there will be a final decision’ on the FFP case until the end of 2025.

“What we don’t know here is if they have not only booked out the panel’s time for the whole of the rest of the year for the hearing, but whether they have also booked them out for the first part of 2025 for them to consider and then write up their written reasons,” Borson said.

“The idea that it would be very early in 2025 if it is a 10-week trial, I think is unlikely. You can expect that they will need something like at least the same time again to write up the decision.

“If it really is a 10-week hearing, I can’t see that they are going to be able to deliver it any time before March.

“If actually what’s happened is loads of charges have dropped off and have already been dealt with and we are actually looking at a much shorter hearing, then everything changes.

“But taking it all at face value from everything we have seen in The Times in particular, that it is a 10-week trial that’s going to run until the end of the year and, therefore, has an incredible level of complexity that we always thought it had, this is just not going to be dealt with to conclusion after appeal before the end of 2025 rather than the end of the 2024-25 season.”

Manchester United‘s Under-21s were in action on Tuesday night at the John Smith’s Stadium, where they were beaten comfortably by Huddersfield Town in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy. It was quite literally men against boys in Town’s 4-1 triumph, but what should illicit most United pride is the vocal away crowd that turned out to support their next generation.

Almost 600 fans made the short trip over from Manchester, singing loud and proud all night, enjoying friendly song exchanges with the youthful Town support to the left of the away end.

United have long packed out allocations across the country and Europe, and though the away stand wasn’t quite full on Tuesday night, those that made the journey deserve some credit.

For many, it was an opportunity to get their weekly football fix with the senior team out of action at the weekend due to the international break. For those much younger, an opportunity to know what it feels like to travel and support their team where tickets are far easier, and cheaper, to buy in comparison to senior games.

Top support as always from the travelling reds 🇾🇪#MUFC pic.twitter.com/Xq3tL56SJ2

    — Adam (@AdamLunat02) November 12, 2024

It may come as a surprise to many, but United fans travelling to support the youngsters is nothing new. They did just that earlier this season in the same competition when the Under-21s played away at Barnsley. Don’t forget, Old Trafford was filled with 67,000 fans in 2022 when the Under-18s were crowned FA Youth Cup winners after beating Nottingham Forest.

On that particular day, the United faithful saw a glimpse of their future, with two young lads called Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo both standing out on the night. Fast-forward two years and they guided the senior team to FA Cup success, both netting at Wembley in May.

The club’s Carrington academy base has long been a talent factory for the youth; the carousel has churned out stars like Marcus Rashford in recent years. And if Gary Neville didn’t mention it enough, the Class of ’92 also came through the same system.

Habeeb Ogunneye, Jayce Fitzgerald and Harry Amass, all of whom were involved against Huddersfield, have enjoyed some degree of involvement with the first team in the last 12 months.

On the final whistle, the defeated youngsters trudged over to applaud those that came out to support them. There’s no guarantee, but those who go on to enjoy a career at United will quickly learn that the away support will always do exactly what it says on the tin: support.

The era of social media has given a platform to YouTubers and influencers who find it easy to hurl abuse at players and spark narratives which are backed by their thousands of followers. Garnacho faced exactly that scenario ahead of last week’s clash against PAOK in the Europa League when a fan was heard giving the Argentina international advice on what he should be doing on the pitch, all while streaming his footage.

Garnacho was then visibly subdued in his celebration of a goal against Leicester, with captain Bruno Fernandes later revealing that the 20-year-old felt he had lost the support of some of the fans.

This came despite the Old Trafford crowd being vocal in their efforts to get behind the winger, who has adopted club legend Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘Viva Ronaldo’ song. The 593 at Huddersfield could be heard singing ‘Viva Garnacho’ on Tuesday night too. A youngster who joined from Spain during the Covid lockdown will have learned a lot about United’s real fanbase this week.

United are now onto their sixth permanent manager since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in Ruben Amorim. All five of his predecessors would probably be in agreement that the only thing they received from match-goers was support.

The culture around United’s fanbase is stark compared to other clubs. Booing performances at half-time and full-time has slowly crept into Old Trafford in recent years, but managers have been supported until their final day.

Jose Mourinho, a man who destroyed any semblance of dressing-room harmony, was supported until the very end. The Portuguese manager’s name was even sung at Old Trafford when he returned to the ground at a later date while on punditry duty with Sky Sports. Everybody had their own opinion on the recently sacked Erik ten Hag, but he too was backed by the fans until his final day.

If the incoming Amorim wants to know what to expect from match-going United fans, he would only have to watch the highlights of the Under 21s clash and note something other than the return of Tyrell Malacia.
