Man Utd reach Amorim ‘agreement’; expected first game surfaces amid reveal on ‘accepted terms’

Man Utd manager target Ruben Amorim

Manchester United have reportedly ‘reached an agreement’ with Sporting Lisbon for Ruben Amorim after INEOS ‘accepted terms’ demanded by the Portuguese club.

The Red Devils made Amorim their top target after Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his recruitment team decided to sack Erik ten Hag following their 2-1 loss at West Ham United on Sunday.

In the summer, 39-year-old Amorim was linked with Liverpool and West Ham United, but he stuck with Sporting Lisbon after helping them win the Primeira Liga last season.

More recently, Amorim has been mooted as a potential replacement for Pep Guardiola after Man City raided Sporting Lisbon for sporting director Hugo Viana.

However, Man Utd have moved to appoint Amorim and an ‘agreement’ has been ‘reached’ between the two clubs.

READ: Ruben Amorim tells Man Utd board to sell quartet who ‘don’t interest him’ as four Sporting stars on wishlist

Man Utd and Sporting Lisbon have been in talks this week and a report claimed two obstacles were in the way of a deal being finalised.

However, a report from The Athletic claims ‘United have reached an agreement with Sporting Lisbon over the hire of Amorim as head coach’.

This report has provided details on this deal and when Amorim will likely ‘first take charge’ of Man Utd.

‘As part of the deal Amorim is set to stay with Sporting for their next three games, including against Manchester City on Tuesday and Braga on November 10, meaning he would first take charge of United away at Ipswich Town on November 24.

‘Sporting were determined to keep hold of Amorim for this crucial period and United have accepted those terms in recognition of the 39-year-old’s standing at the Portuguese club and his desire for a smooth exit mid-campaign.’

‘Amorim has a €10million (£8.4m, $10.9m) release clause in his contract, but there is also a 30-day notice period. United are willing to pay €1m extra to get Amorim earlier, so he can start work during the international break. Sporting had been demanding an additional €5m for an immediate release, according to people familiar with the deal in Portugal.

‘There have also been conversations around further compensation to allow the departures of the staff Amorim has earmarked to join him, namely first-team coaches Emanuel Ferro, Adelio Candido, and Carlos Fernandes, as well as goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital and sports scientist Paulo Barreira.

‘Amorim wants a satisfactory departure from a club he has called home for four years, conscious of the bond established with supporters in two league title wins, and United were open to such diplomacy given the season is underway and Ruud van Nistelrooy is capable of stepping up as interim manager.’

Tottenham 2-1 Man City: Werner ends goal drought as Citizens knocked out

    Werner Tottenham

Timo Werner’s first goal in 18 matches helped Tottenham knock Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 win after a pulsating fourth-round tie.

Werner set Spurs on course for victory when he rifled home in the fifth minute, which was followed by a superb curled strike from Pape Sarr midway through the first half.

City responded with a Matheus Nunes goal on the stroke of half-time but after Pep Guardiola decided against bringing on Erling Haaland, Tottenham held on for a crucial win which sent them into the quarter-finals and helped push them a step closer to ending a 16-year trophy drought.

It was not a solely positive night for Ange Postecoglou after he lost Micky van de Ven to injury and City winger Savinho left the pitch on a stretcher as the packed fixture schedule hit home for both managers.

Guardiola had stated last month that City would not waste any energy on this competition, but named a stronger than expected team with only two inexperienced younger players included in Nico O’Reilly and James McAtee.

It was a similar story for Postecoglou, although one of the five players he recalled after the 1-0 loss at Crystal Palace immediately justified his selection.

Werner returned in place of 17-year-old Mikey Moore and ended his goal drought which stretched back to March early on.

Spurs played out from the back impressively before Archie Gray found Brennan Johnson, who flicked into the path of Dejan Kulusevski and he produced a perfectly-weighted cross for Werner to slam home from 14 yards.

Tottenham’s momentum was checked when Van de Ven felt his hamstring after a tackle on Savinho and looked distraught as he walked off to be replaced by Destiny Udogie.

After City youngster O’Reilly needed treatment soon after, the hosts almost grabbed a second from a short corner but Kulusevski ballooned his effort over.

It should have been a warning sign for the visitors, but it was not heeded and Spurs made it 2-0 through Sarr in the 25th minute.

Werner and Kulusevski combined from a short corner before the latter rolled into the path of Sarr, who produced a sublime curled effort from 25 yards that beat Stefan Ortega and nestled into the bottom corner.

City produced a response with a free-kick from Ilkay Gundogan sent over before a dangerous Nunes cross evaded Phil Foden.

The chances kept on coming with a Savinho effort curled wide and Foden directed another free-kick off target before the deficit was reduced.

Savinho got to the byline and crossed in for Nunes to side-foot home at the back post in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time.

Guardiola followed up the goal with the introduction of Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic at half-time.

Postecoglou also brought on Yves Bissouma before he made the surprise decision to replace stand-in-captain Cristian Romero, who had been excellent.

Tottenham could have restored their two-goal advantage by this point after Werner raced half the length of the pitch only to fire inches wide not long after Johnson tested Ortega with a stinging effort.

Ortega was required again when Johnson played in Kulusevski, but his low strike was pushed out before the injury curse struck again.

Firstly, Savinho went down – moments after Bernardo Silva had been brought on – and had to leave on a stretcher, which was soon followed by Werner being forced to limp out of the action.

The next opportunity went to City, but substitute Jacob Wright curled wide with 21 minutes left before Guardiola turned to Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, which meant Haaland would not be introduced.

Haaland-less City still pushed for a leveller and almost forced penalties in the 89th minute when Guglielmo Vicario failed to claim a corner, but O’Reilly’s shot on the turn was brilliantly booted wide by Bissouma on the line to hand the visitors a first defeat of the season.

  • Viktor Gyokeres among Sporting players angry with Ruben Amorim over Man Utd move

Viktor Gyokeres among Sporting players angry with Ruben Amorim over Man Utd move

    Amorim Gyokeres

Ruben Amorim is set to become the new Manchester United manager and ‘several Sporting players questioned the coach about the decision’, including Viktor Gyokeres.

Amorim is on the verge of taking over at Old Trafford after Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday with the Red Devils informing Sporting Lisbon that they are ready to pay the manager’s £8.3m release clause.

They want to have him in place ahead of the clash with Chelsea but that may not be possible unless there is a breakthrough in discussions, with other sticking points involving his backroom staff also needing to be resolved.

He’s reportedly already made his thoughts on the current United squad clear to the board, with four who ‘don’t interest him’ surplus to requirements and set to be made available for transfer in January, while he has his eye on a Sporting quartet to replace them.

Amorim was asked after Sporting’s 3-1 win over Nacional on Tuesday about his supposedly imminent move to United.

Amorim said: “We have to wait a little bit to explain everything I need to explain, then it will be very clear.

“It is my decision. I will tell everything so we have to wait. I don’t know [how long this period will be].”

Amorim was also asked whether he will be at Old Trafford on Sunday to take charge of United’s clash against Chelsea.

He replied: “I will be here in Lisbon.” When Sky Sports reporter Gary Cotterill followed up with “definitely?”, Amorim laughed: “I don’t know,” before making a swift exit out of the press room.

Amorim’s decision to leave mid-season hasn’t gone down well with some of the Sporting players, according to Portuguese outlet O Jogo, who name Gyokeres and Morten Hjulmand as two particularly frustrated stars after they turned down summer proposals in order to continue to play under Amorim at Sporting.

    The report states:

‘The news of Rúben Amorim’s departure to Manchester United did not fall well within the Sporting squad, even before the game with Nacional, and several players questioned the coach about the decision to leave the team in the middle of the project.

‘As the coach admitted at the post-game Imprena conference, he had to take “an elephant out of the room” in the morning training, also saying that the players no longer even paid attention to the game’s lecture, taking into account the noise that surrounds them.

‘Now, O Jogo knows that some players of the squad were not satisfied with the news of the interest of the red devils, namely athletes with more market, as is the case of Gyokeres and Hjulmand, who had proposals to leave in the summer transfer window, but who were “enticed” to stay at Sporting due to the double championship project and continuity of Rúben Amorim. Now, this scenario falls to the ground.

‘The Swedish striker himself admitted at the end of the game against Nacional that he “will not wear himself out” with the theme of the exit, while Rúben Amorim is still on the bench. “He’s here and that’s what I’m focused on, let’s see what will happen. He’s still here, so I won’t wear myself out,” he told SportTV.’

It’s not clear just how angry Gyokeres is with Amorim, though it may be a factor should United want to sign the Sweden international, as a report claims.

The striker is one of the hottest properties in European football right now, leading the way in the 2024 goalscoring stakes, and while his relationship with Amorim would ordinarily be seen as a positive for United, and probably still would be, the Portuguese manager’s decision to walk away having persuaded Gyokeres to stay may throw a spanner in the works for the Red Devils.

Man Utd target Amorim pleads for time to ‘explain’ as Ten Hag replacement ‘travels to England’

    Amorim Sporting

The Manchester United managerial cycle continues and it looks to be Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim who is next in line at Old Trafford.

After Erik ten Hag had been sacked on Monday, reports quickly emerged as United had lined up a deal with Sporting, with the Premier League club having agreed to pay the release clause for the Portuguese boss.

Although reports surfaced, Amorim still had a team to manage on Tuesday night as Sporting beat Nacional 3-1, and as is always the case when United are in the news, reporters rushed to Portugal to get a word with the manager.

Amorim’s post match press conference was bombarded with questions surrounding his future, and was asked to address the United links.

Amorim said: “We have to wait a little bit to explain everything I need to explain, then it will be very clear.

He continued: “It is my decision. I will tell everything so we have to wait. I don’t know [how long this period will be].

Amorim was appointed as head coach in the Portuguese capital after taking charge of just 13 games in charge of Braga. Prior to that, he led the Braga B team and Casa Pia, but the proposition in Manchester is a whole new world compared to what he is used to.

Amorim has won two Portuguese league titles at the club, ending a 19 year wait in 2021. He had been touted as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City should he decide not to extend his current deal at the Etihad.

Sporting’s director of football Hugo Viana is already switching Lisbon for Manchester come the turn of the year after agreeing to replace the departing Txiki Begiristain.

A move to the Etihad would certainly be a smoother transition for Amorim with the players he would have at his disposal, as well as the best in class football leadership team City boast, though it looks like the 39-year-old is up for the challenge of awaking a sleeping giant and potentially taking United back to the top of English football, though that looks a far cry at this current moment in time.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of United until any deal for Amorim is made official.
