    Eight individuals detained in Slovakia for fraud involving ammunition for Ukraine

    Eight individuals, together with defence ministry workers, have been detained in Slovakia as a part of an investigation by the European Public Prosecutor's Workplace into the attainable misuse of funds allotted for army help to Ukraine.

    Particulars: On 18 June, the prosecutor's workplace performed evidence-gathering actions as a part of an investigation into the suspected misuse of funds designated for army help to Ukraine. The injury is estimated at €7.4 million.

    Eight people have been detained, 4 of whom are civil servants on the Slovak Defence Ministry.

    In April 2025, the EPPO launched an investigation into senior defence ministry officers who had been suspected of misusing funds allotted for army help to Ukraine.

    From February to March 2022, the senior officers on the Slovak Defence Ministry submitted claims to the European Peace Facility for the reimbursement of bills associated to army help offered to Ukraine, specifically for ammunition that had been delivered.

    It’s alleged that the suspects intentionally breached their duties and broke budgetary guidelines by issuing unjustified orders to buy ammunition from two personal corporations. The EPPO suspects that the procurement course of was rigged and that the ammunition could have been bought at an inflated value.

    The investigation is being performed in cooperation with Slovakia's Workplace for Combating Organised Crime of the Presidium of the Police Pressure.

    All suspects are presumed harmless till confirmed responsible within the competent Slovakian courts.

    For reference: The European Public Prosecutor's Workplace is the unbiased public prosecution workplace of the EU, chargeable for investigating, prosecuting and bringing to judgment crimes towards the EU’s monetary pursuits.

    Background: In 2024, it was reported that Slovak authorities had requested the police to launch an investigation into the previous authorities and former defence minister Jaroslav Naď in reference to the switch of MiG-29 fighter jets and a Kub air defence system to Ukraine.
