Romania's 2024 parliamentary elections: turnout higher than in the first round of presidential elections

In the Romanian parliamentary elections, 39 parties are competing for 465 seats in the bicameral parliament. The ultra-nationalist alliance for the unity of Romanians leads with 22.4% of support, ahead of the ruling party.

More than 3 million Romanians have already voted in the parliamentary elections in Romania. The turnout is higher than in the first round of the presidential election. About it UNN reports with reference to Digi24.

On Sunday, December 1, Romanians vote in parliamentary elections to take their representatives to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. The elections are being held in a difficult context for Romania, and the Foreign Press calls them "the most important elections in the last 35 years.

39 parties and 19 minority organizations took part in the elections. Polling stations across the country opened on Sunday at 7:00 and will close at 21:00. Romanians of the diaspora have two days to vote – Saturday and Sunday.

According to the Romanian service of Radio Liberty, more than 10,000 candidates have registered to compete for seats in the bicameral parliament – 329 seats in the Lower House of the Chamber of Deputies and 136 seats in the Senate.

A pre-election poll conducted by Atlas Intel showed that the far-right ultranationalist Alliance for the unity of Romanians (AUR) leads with 22.4% of support, slightly ahead of the ruling Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 21.4%.

AUR takes a sharply anti-Western stance, questioning Romania's membership in the European Union and NATO, as well as promoting xenophobia and conspiracy theories.

    addition

On November 29, the Romanian authorities began a recount after an election that rocked the country's political establishment with the victory of a little-known ultranationalist candidate. In addition, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine may decide to cancel the first round of presidential elections and reassign it.

Romania's National Broadcasting Council is asking the European Commission to investigate TikTok's activities due to suspected manipulation of the presidential election. The platform is accused of promoting pro-Russian candidate Kalin Giorgescu through fake accounts.
