Trump has chosen a new ambassador to the UN: what is known about candidate Alice Stefanik

Donald Trump has nominated Republican Alice Stefanik as a candidate for the post of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Stefanik is known for her criticism of the UN and controversial stance on Ukraine – she supported sanctions against rf, but voted against new funding.

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has named Republican Alice Stefanik as his nominee for ambassador to the United Nations, reports UNN citing CNN.

“I am honored to nominate Alice Stefanik to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in my office. Alice is an incredibly strong, tough and smart fighter for 'America First,'” Trump said in a statement, confirming a CNN report Sunday that Stefanik had been offered the role.

The New York congresswoman, the fourth-ranking Republican in the House, has been a staunch ally of the president-elect and a major fundraiser for the Republican Party.

CNN notes that Stefanik's selection signals a more aggressive U.S. stance toward the UN. Stefanik has often criticized the international organization, especially for its criticism of Israel, and said last month that the Biden administration should consider a “complete reevaluation” of U.S. funding for the UN if the Palestinian Authority continues to push for the withdrawal of Israel's UN membership.

According to Radio Liberty, she co-sponsored a bill that would impose sanctions on russia's financial and energy sectors and increase U.S. military aid in Ukraine ahead of rf's invasion.

But at the same time, the congresswoman voted against providing Ukraine with $61 billion in new funding this year. She justified this decision by saying that “while she supports the idea of military aid to Ukraine, she cannot advocate for additional funds for non-lethal assistance in the context of the crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border.
