Ukraine desires to deal with UN Safety Council assembly referred to as by Estonia over Russian actions

Ukraine has approached South Korea, which at present holds the UN Safety Council presidency, asking to be allowed to talk at an upcoming assembly referred to as by Estonia in response to Russian plane coming into Estonian airspace.

Particulars: Sybiha stated Estonia's request that an emergency Safety Council assembly be convened for the primary time in 34 years "reveals the unprecedented scale of threats posed by aggressive Russia to the steadiness of Europe".

Background:

  • The UN Safety Council is about to carry an emergency assembly on 22 September as a consequence of Russia’s violation of Estonian airspace on 19 September.
  • On 19 September, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland with out permission and remained there for a complete of 12 minutes. NATO stated it had intercepted the warplanes.
  • Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said that Estonia has initiated NATO consultations underneath Article 4 of the Washington Treaty.
