Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has welcomed the nomination of Senator Marco Rubio as the next US secretary of state.

Details: Sybiha noted that Rubio has been nominated as the 72nd US secretary of state.

Quote: "I look forward to working together, deepening the mutually beneficial Ukraine-US strategic partnership, and advancing peace through strength in Ukraine and around the world."

The new secretary of state must be confirmed by Congress next year, but with the Republicans holding a majority in the US Senate, the confirmation is not expected to face hurdles.

• Historically, Marco Rubio has emphasised the importance of supporting Ukraine and even publicly criticised party colleagues for questioning the need to assist Ukraine.
• However, his stance has recently become more cautious; in April, he voted against the US$61 billion aid package for Kyiv. He has also recently changed his rhetoric on how to end the war.
