Russian vice-governor and military commander killed in Kursk Oblast, Astra reports

Sergei Yefremov, Vice-Governor of Russia's Primorsky Krai and commander of the Tiger navy unit, was killed in Kursk Oblast, Russian Telegram information channel Astra reported on Feb. 2.

In keeping with experiences from one other Russian channel Mash, Yefremov’s car struck a mine and exploded, killing him and one other officer.

"Whereas getting back from a fight mission, Sergei Yefremov, the commander of the Tiger unit, was killed," Primorsky Krai Governor Oleg Kozhemyako mentioned.

The Tiger volunteer unit was fashioned in 2022, and Yefremov took command of it in Aug. 2024.

Following his new appointment, his unit was deployed to Kursk Oblast.

Kyiv's restricted incursion into Kursk Oblast started on Aug. 6, 2024, when Ukrainian forces briefly captured about 1,300 sq. kilometers (500 sq. miles) of Russian territory.

Whereas Ukraine has reportedly misplaced round half of that territory since then, preventing continues within the area.

Ukraine hopes to leverage its presence within the space in potential peace negotiations. Final fall, North Korean troops have been deployed to Kursk Oblast to assist Russian forces in countering the Ukrainian incursion.
