  • Arsenal title credentials questioned as Arteta backed to drop attacker after tough loss

Arsenal title credentials questioned as Arteta backed to drop attacker after tough loss

    Mikel Arteta, Arsenal, November 2024

Joe Cole has admitted he is “second-guessing” his prediction that Arsenal will win the title after they lost to Newcastle, and he believes Mikel Arteta could drop Leandro Trossard.

Arsenal started Saturday five points behind Manchester City, and could have ended it eight points behind them. Indeed, the Gunners played the early Premier League game, in which they were beaten by Newcastle.

City then only had to beat Bournemouth to extend the gap, but lost. Liverpool, though, did win, and their gap from the top of the table to Arsenal, now fourth, is seven points.

With a big gap to the top, and following a loss to Newcastle, former Premier League attacker Cole has questioned Arsenal’s title credentials.

“I think this is a season-turning result for Newcastle. A lot of people tipped Arsenal for the league, me included, but I’m second-guessing that now after what I saw today,” he said on TNT Sports.

“They need to go back, take ownership and lift themselves ahead of a huge week now. Going to [Inter] Milan and playing Chelsea who have been in great form.

“I’ve had a change of heart, yeah. I’m not doing a full reversal yet but I’m having a change of heart.”

Cole also feels changes will be made by Arsenal boss Arteta for the next game, including potentially Trossard being dropped.

“I’m sure Mikel will make changes because Trossard was off it today, he’s fantastic but there will be changes,” he said.

Trossard has scored two goals for the Gunners this season, but has not done so for four games in the Premier League. He has started the three most recent games in that stretch, which have resulted in two losses and a draw.

Arsenal have failed to score in two of those games, against Bournemouth and Newcastle, so there’s a chance that there are indeed changes in the attack going forwards, in order to change the fortunes of the side.

  • Gary O’Neil displays hint of deep-thinking genius for Wolves rarely seen since MNF reveal

Gary O’Neil displays hint of deep-thinking genius for Wolves rarely seen since MNF reveal

    O'Neil Crystal Palace Wolves

We enjoyed a hint of the deep-thinking tactical genius rarely displayed by Gary O’Neil since his Monday Night Football appearance over a year ago. But Wolves need much, much more.

Sunday league footballers nodded in acknowledgement as Trevoh Chalobah swung with one leg as the ball hit the other when faced only with the goalkeeper, momentarily deploring his own clumsiness before blocking Philippe Mateta’s goal-bound shot on the line. It summed up a first half of good chances and woeful finishing from both sides.

But the Chelsea loanee made up for that comical moment in the second half, displaying the poise and quality so lacking from every other player on the pitch up to that point when given an opportunity to score.

Far more seasoned finishers would have panicked as the ball fell to Chalobah at the back post after Jose Sa came and flapped at a cross. He took an excellent touch on his thigh before half-volleying his shot from a tight angle into the empty goal.

Crystal Palace had a number of chances before that and plenty more after, with Ismaila Sarr chief among the profligates. It ended up being almost impressive that he failed to score, spooning perhaps the best opportunity well over the bar from around the penalty spot after a ball was cut back to him, also curling another shot well past the post when placed.

Matheus Cunha was Wolves’ greatest threat, and was denied two brilliant assists by the indecision of Pablo Sarabia, who waited too long twice when faced only with Dean Henderson to spurn those clearcut chances, and was being booed by the Wolves fans by the time he was hauled off on the hour mark, when Gary O’Neil incurred the wrath of Wolves fans by taking off Tommy Doyle, throwing caution to the wind with a triple change.

He had to, it was feeling like the end for him.

Having given Palace the lead Chalobah made a boob as Wolves restored parity, miscalculating the flight of a switch that left him sprawling on the ground as Cunha took the ball down on his chest, with a suspicion of arm, before playing a delicate pass with the outside of his boot for Jorgen Strand Larsen to run onto and slot calmly under Henderson.

Five minutes later Mario Lemina, who came on for Toti Gomes but was essentially playing in midfield, did brilliantly to find Cunha, who drove at the Palace defence, fed substitute Goncalo Guedes on the right before his first-time square pass found the excellent Joao Gomes, who calmly passed the ball into the corner. It was a lovely move.

But neither team had control of what was a thoroughly entertaining game in the second half. Palace kept pushing and Marc Guehi equalised from a corner thanks to some very static defending from Wolves, whose manager clings to his job after another game without a win.

O’Neil retains his status as one of football’s deep-thinkers in the minds of the majority, a reputation built it seems mainly through his Monday Night Football appearance on Sky Sports over a year ago.

No Premier League side that has played all of the 39 games since has collected fewer points than Wolves (38), and although many would say – quite reasonably – that O’Neil illustrated his tactical chops here as his substitutions and in-game management turned the game on its head, there’s only so long we can turn a blind eye to the results and the ease with which opposition teams get at Wolves and score against them.

They’ve scored as many goals (14) as Nottingham Forest, who are third, but have conceded 27 to their seven. They’ve shipped six more goals than any other Premier League side. They’ve got enough in attack through Cunha, Strand Larsen and others to be a mid-table team, and O’Neil’s tactics in possession are working. There are clear patterns of play and Wolves are a decent watch.

But in defence they’re all over the place, both in open play and from set pieces, and yes, they lost their best defender in Max Kilman in the summer, but this looks as much about poor organisation as a lack of individual quality.

The buck stops with O’Neil, who can count himself fortunate to still be in the job despite an admittedly very difficult run of fixtures at the start of the season. But this was a game they should be winning against a team of similar quality on their own patch.

There are relatively easy fixtures to come for Wolves, who need their manager to impart some of his lesser seen tactical genius to drive them away from the bottom of the table and keep himself in the dugout.

Bournemouth 2-1 Man City: Champions stunned as Cherries pull off shock victory

Bernardo Silva, Manchester City, November 2024

Manchester City suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth, with the champions failing to make the most of a loss to Arsenal earlier on Saturday.

City watched the Gunners slip to a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle earlier in the day. That meant they remained five points apart, allowing City to extend that gap to eight if they beat the Cherries.

But they were down on resources, with multiple players injured and some even playing through pain.

The Premier League champions were evidently not their usual dominant selves, and went 1-0 down through an Antoine Semenyo goal in the ninth minute.

Bournemouth doubled their lead in the second half, with Evanilson turning the ball past Ederson in the City net.

In the 82nd minute, Josko Gvardiol’s goal gave City hope of a comeback, as did late attempts from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

But neither attacker was able to find the back of the net, and City were dealt their first loss of the season.

Man Utd: Ruben Amorim ‘not his usual self’ after ‘strange moment’ as ‘friends’ reveal his ‘exhaustion’

Man Utd manager target Ruben Amorim sits on the bench before a game

According to reports, Ruben Amorim has been ‘affected by the whole process’ leading to him replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Amorim was named Man Utd‘s head coach on Friday after the Premier League giants sacked former boss Ten Hag on Monday morning.

39-year-old Amorim has been on the radar of several elite European clubs for a couple of years as he’s done a great job at Sporting Lisbon.

Since arriving in 2020, Amorim has helped Sporting Lisbon win two Primeira Liga titles and they have won their opening ten league games this season. The Portuguese outfit had previously gone 18 years without winning the title.

Liverpool and West Ham were mooted as possible destinations for Amorim in the summer, but they looked elsewhere. This opened the door for Man Utd to appoint him and he will take charge at Old Trafford at the start of this month’s international break on November 11.

A report from The Athletic ‘inside the Amorim deal’ has revealed two concerns INEOS have about the inexperienced head coach and they have also stated how he has been ‘affected by the whole process’.

READ: Mason Mount set to usurp Bruno Fernandes at Man Utd: The Ruben Amorim winners and losers

The report claims Amorim ‘confided in friends’ to inform them that his ‘grilling’ after Tuesday’s 3-1 win against Nacional in the Taca Da Liga ‘exhausted him’.

‘At the end of Tuesday, after he had been grilled by journalists in the wake of a 3-1 win over Nacional, he confided in friends that the experience had exhausted him.

‘Colleagues who have known Amorim for years observed he didn’t look his usual relaxed self during the press conference. That much was understandable.’

The report also claims Amorim looked ‘awkward and shy’ during a ‘strange moment’ on Tuesday night, but he is a ‘more natural fit’ for Man Utd than Ten Hag for one reason.

‘Just before the game, Sporting fans, as is tradition, held their scarves aloft and sang the club anthem. But Amorim kept his head down, looking at the ground, hands in his pockets, looking somewhat shy and awkward. It was a strange moment. He didn’t celebrate any goals, instead crouching down on his haunches. He paced his technical area, kept giving instructions to his players, and occasionally clapped and pointed.

‘A group of fans tried to start a chant about Amorim but others whistled them silent. Some supporters are very thankful for all that he has done. Others are unhappy — not about the move to United, but the timing. They believe he should have finished the season.

‘United could not countenance that, and they are pleased the agreement has been found quickly and discreetly. Amorim has transformed Sporting and the hope is he can do the same for United. He will not be 40 until January, and there is a belief he is ready to build at the club for a long period and develop young players.

‘His charisma is seen as a more natural fit to deal with the media at United than Ten Hag, and though that brings with it his strong opinions, executives are said to welcome the inevitable debates that will come.’

  • Ranking Prem bottom six on survival chances with one of three promoted sides tipped to stay up

Ranking Prem bottom six on survival chances with one of three promoted sides tipped to stay up

    Premier League relegation

It’s been Manchester United this, Ruben Amorim that all week. So it’s easy to forget that there are other Premier League clubs to discuss and a tasty weekend at the bottom is on the horizon.

While another three-club Premier League title race *could* be on the cards, a mini-league of six teams has formed at the bottom as Southampton, Wolves, Ipswich Town, Crystal Palace, Everton and Leicester City battle to avoid relegation to the Championship.

Very little is set in stone at this point of the season, but it feels pretty likely that these six teams will be the only ones in the relegation dogfight. This is obviously barring 14th-placed Man Utd immediately plunging into new depths of misery under Amorim, which is as improbable as it would be hilarious.

So from least to most likely to go down, here’s our ranking of the relegation-fearing sextet on their chances of falling to the Championship…

    6) Crystal Palace
Rueing the untimely end of the 2023/24 campaign, Crystal Palace’s recent woes have been one of this season’s surprises in the Premier League. But really, we should have seen it coming.

Under respected head coach Oliver Glasner, Palace suddenly became the Premier League’s most exciting team at the end of last season. But with the Eagles ending the campaign at their peak in terms of xG, there was bound to be some drop-off in their output in front of goal.

This decline has been sharper than the Palace faithful would have feared and they have also been negatively impacted by a frustrating summer which saw them lose two of their best players, Michael Olise and Joachim Andersen.

The timely visit of Dr Tottenham last weekend gave Palace their first Premier League win of the season. But this came at a price as Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton were forced off with injuries, which will keep the pair out for around a month.

Palace’s season won’t be anywhere near as thrilling as first suspected, but Glasner’s men should have more than enough quality to ease clear of their five rivals and avoid relegation again.

READ: Big Weekend: Manchester United, Martin, Wood and the battle for fourth between Spurs and Villa

    5) Everton
Just when you think Everton are properly f***ed, they manage to pull a positive run of results out of their arse to ease their relegation fears.

This has been a hallmark of Sean Dyche’s tenure as manager, which reportedly came within a couple more bad results away from ending earlier this campaign as Everton plotted sanctioning a ‘sensational return’.

While Dyche’s dogged approach can be extremely uninspiring at the worst of times, it does tend to bear fruit for a side in the thick of a relegation battle and Everton – who are unbeaten in five Premier League games – have hauled themselves off the canvas of late.

Everton beat Ipswich Town after earning a similarly vital win over Crystal Palace and could hammer the final nail in Russell Martin’s coffin this weekend.

More dark days will come for Everton this season and they will make life difficult for themselves at times; because that’s just what they do. But by hook or crook, Dyche will get them over the safety line before he’s replaced in the summer as their takeover kickstarts a much-needed new era after the club bid farewell to Goodison Park in a stereotypically arduous fashion.

    4) Leicester City
Enzo Maresca has surprised us all at the start of this season
as the former Leicester City boss is moving towards justifying Chelsea’s needless decision to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino.

But Maresca was not without his critics last season as Leicester made hard work of getting promotion despite the riches of quality in their squad. His exit and subsequent change of playing style at The King Power Stadium have arguably improved their survival chances.

Steve Cooper was another manager under pressure in the early weeks of this season and his pragmatic approach is still yet to win over the Leicester masses. But without it, the Foxes risked doing a Southampton and going down with a whimper while being dragged down by the naivety of the man in the dugout.

While Leicester’s current squad is arguably weaker than last season, some wise transfer dealings (particularly the loan arrival of Facundo Buonanotte) have given Cooper’s side a boost. After vitally avoiding a pre-season points deduction, they currently look to have the most fight of the three promoted Championship teams.

👉 Van Nistelrooy future lies away from Man Utd as Wolves, West Ham eyes on three-game audition
👉 Moises Caicedo forces his way into the Premier League team of the season so far

    3) Ipswich Town
The optimism surrounding Ipswich Town’s chances of survival understandably increased over the summer
as they invested heavily and – on paper at least – made some excellent signings.

Did they sign too many players? Perhaps. But they at least made a statement of intent and showed they were unwilling to lie down and have their belly tickled by the big hitters upon making their long-awaited Premier League return.

Under Kieran McKenna, Ipswich were riding the crest of a wave heading into this season. But a year in the Premier League would always be a whole other kettle of fish.

McKenna and a large portion of his squad are still getting accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League and their inexperience showed in their damaging recent home defeat against Everton.

There have been signs of promise that Ipswich supporters can hang their hats on and several players (Liam Delap for sure) should do enough to earn a prolonged Premier League stay. But like Luton Town last season, McKenna’s side will likely come up short while having a bloody good go before being primed for an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation.

    2) Wolves
Gary O’Neil being mooted as the next Manchester United manager feels like a lifetime ago
as the under-fire Wolves boss’ stock has fallen drastically.

The teases of Wolves’ imminent downfall were evident from last season’s run-in as O’Neil’s side finished the 2023/24 campaign poorly and this negativity has carried over into this campaign.

Wolves have shown signs of life against Manchester City and Brighton and were somewhat unfortunate to come away with just a point from these games. Still, they remain winless in the league and desperately need to enter the winners’ column when they host Palace on Saturday evening.

Last season, Wolves were a thorn in the side of Big Six teams as they earned a few scalps, but this has looked far less likely this season as they have been hopeless defensively.

Wolves’ embarrassing tally of 25 goals conceded in nine games gives them the unwanted tag of the Premier League’s worst defence. O’Neil may well be an innovative coach, but patience is wearing thin at Molineux and his side is at risk of a disastrous campaign.

    1) Southampton
The Saints stunk of Vincent Kompany’s Burnley ahead of this season as Martin and his team were at risk of being exposed by higher quality opposition if they were unwilling to adapt and become more difficult to beat.

Infuriatingly, Martin has fallen into the same trap as Kompany, albeit with an even worse squad as Southampton have been pretty dire.

Failing to win against t10-man Newcastle United on the opening day set the tone for what’s come since as their alarming lack of goal threat and charitable defence makes them the worst side in the Premier League this season.

The seemingly imminent Martin sack and subsequent change of approach may give them more of a fighting chance, but the damage is likely already done as Southampton stare down the barrel at another relegation from the Premier League.
